German minister sees `no basis' for talks with Turkey after failed coup

Source: Reuters

Turkey and Germany's relationship - essential to curbing mass migration to Europe - has grown so bad the two countries have virtually "no basis" for talks, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said on Thursday.

Germany has serious concern about mass arrests carried out by Turkish officials after a thwarted coup last month, Steinmeier said.

At the same time, Turkey feels Germany has not taken the July 15 coup attempt seriously, and its government is angered by German media reports suggesting it was orchestrated by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.

"We are talking with each other like emissaries from two different planets," Steinmeier said, speaking in the northern German city of Stralsund. "There is essentially no basis for understanding ... no basis for discussions."

Relations between Germany and Turkey have been tense for months following a June 2 vote by the German parliament to brand the 1915 massacre of Armenians by Ottoman forces as genocide, a move sharply criticised by Erdogan and other Turkish officials.

Germany has a huge turkish minority and many are still loyal to Turkey. They held a huge rally in Cologne last weekend, to show support for Erdogan and their disdain for the putsch.

Erdogan originally wanted to hold a speech to the demonstration via streaming it from Turkey to an open-air screen in Cologne.

A german court sad No: The right to protest only applies to people appearing in person. Erdogan streaming it in would be a political speech, not a "protest", and as such would need the permission of the german government. (Which he didn't have and didn't even ask for.)

Now Erdogan is outraged how a german court dared to defy his wishes.

why don't they move back? Fair question. They moved to Germany for opportunities they would not have in Turkey. Either be loyal to the country that allows you there to work, live, and feed your family, or move back. Turks in Germany should be raising a middle finger to Erdogan.
Good for Germany for shutting down that speech. Erdogan needs to be told 'no' often, loudly, and publicly.

Turkey had the same exact two Russian state hacker groups as DNC/our government had. Turkey had the same wiki leak files dumped right as the coup developed. Those files were mainly emails of same thousands of people turkey now rounds-up.

IMO, it was a fake coup, intended to destabilize turkey even more then the several bombings softened/destabilized that country and it did. Turkeys president may not have even known.

All countries will distance themselves from Turkey.
