Electoral map expands for Clinton, shrinks for Trump

Source: The Hill

By Niall Stanage - 08/05/16 12:01 PM EDT

Donald Trump’s stumbles over the last two weeks have led to a shift in polls that is giving Hillary Clinton significant leads in several swing states while putting other states previously seen as safely Republican within her grasp.

Several polls in recent days have suggested that states that would not be in play in more normal election years are now competitive, including Arizona and Georgia. Nationally, new polls from NBC News/Wall Street Journal, McClatchy and Fox News have pegged Clinton’s lead at between 9 and 15 points.

There are still three months to Election Day, giving Trump time to close the gap or overtake Clinton. But a look at states across the country shows how his Electoral College math has been made more difficult.

By a conservative estimate, Clinton starts off with 195 of the 270 Electoral College votes required to win the White House already in the bank. And it’s not out of question that she could get to almost 400 electoral votes if everything breaks her way.

1. If Clinton can win the same states that Obama won in 2008

that'll be 365 right off the bat. Any additional would be sprinkles on top of that icing on the cake.

2. Bill Clinton won Georgia, Missouri, Montana, and others

Obama won North Carolina, Indiana, and 1 of Nebraska's too.

The anti-trump sentiments and the libertarians could give us the advantage in many formerly red states.

I hope we win big and and take both houses of Congress too. It's the only way to move forward from these obstructionists.

Demographics are on our side. We need to make sure our people are registered and come out to vote. We have to work for it, but we can totally win big this year. It could be a sea change that alters the future of this country so hard that the GOP has to completely rethink what they stand for as a party and do some soul searching. The party of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and Eisenhower or the party of Trump and Duke?

He is going to need a lot more than just time. Maybe a lobotomy.

that Trump increases his support between now and election day, unless e-mails from Clinton to Satan are in the next Wikileaks dump. He's pretty much reached the ceiling of ignorant, bigoted nutbags in this country and, as distressing as it is to see that ceiling even as high as it is, there ain't no more out there for him to grab. And that doesn't even take into account the slow, ongoing bleed of traditional Republican support that he's suffering.

5. OK . . . The news has not just been good this week for Hillary . . . It has been like a gift from

The election gods! Why then am I so nervous????? November is 4 months away . . . We have not seen the worst that Assange will try to do . . . GOP has to have an October surprise waiting in the wings . . . and the 3rd Party Candidates are beginning to look like a favorable option to many of my young friends. This Libertarian ticket - we need to stop it from gathering steam. I've stayed silent on fb when friends bring it up because I don't want to start the war now . . . But for any person who has espoused liberal principles in the past . . . to turn away now from what could possibly be a historic defeat for the right wing is just plain nuts! We have a chance to beat these right wingers here and now! Let's not separate over issues now . . . A strong coalition of the left will propel this Country into the next century and maybe lay to rest many of the right wing causes for good!

7. I do . . . but I wish the election was Tuesday! The GOP will either right it's ship or bail! I hope

The Libertarian Party has the potential to crack what's left of the Republican Party in half.

And the Greens, what are they polling? Something like three percent?

10. Agreed . . . It's just that people I know would typically vote for the Dem Candidate . . .

are now Libertairian ticket supporters . . . spouting that they system is broken . . . daily attracting more and more supporters. I can seem to get through how that ticket promises nothing to no one. With no congressional support they just play spoiler. These are smart people who don't like Trump and have no love for the Clintons. I do my best trying to get them to see how their agenda will not be supported but they seem to be gaining steam . . . November can't come soon enough to!
