John Timoney, former chief in Miami and Philly, loses battle with lung cancer

John Timoney, the very epitome of the tough Irish cop who grew in New York and rose through its ranks before landing top spots in Philadelphia and Miami, died Tuesday night after a long battle with lung cancer.
Following a forced departure from Miami in 2010 after a political upheaval and then several years of high-profile consulting work much of it in the Middle East Timoney had returned to Miami where he kept a home, for treatment.
Last month, he told a news outlet in Philadelphia that his voice was completely gone and noted that his father had died of the same disease when he was 54. That same day, a friend who saw Timoney told the Miami Herald the former police chief seemed to be improving.
Timoney was 68.

Just saw a Philly Inquirer breaking banner (they didn't have the story yet) and found this one.
He was quite the character whereever he went. Seems like ages ago since he was Commissioner here in Philly.
