Clinton, Trump agree to first 2016 Presidential Forum focusing on veterans, national security

Source: NBC News

Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump will appear at a Commander-in-Chief forum to discuss national security, military affairs and veterans issues in a primetime event announced Thursday by the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

The presidential candidates will appear back-to-back in the one-hour event on September, 7, hosted by the IAVA and simulcast by NBC and MSNBC. The two candidates will answer questions from NBC News and an audience that includes military veterans and active service members.

"IAVA members world-wide, 93% of whom say they'll be voting in November, and many deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan right now, are ready to hear from the candidates and hold them accountable," Paul Rieckhoff, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of IAVA, said in the announcement.

He must figure that using the VA scandal - a problem inherited from Dubya - will be enough. forest444 Aug 2016 #18

I'd be loathe to appear anywhere with that guy

He usually does enough damage to himself that no help is needed

Hillary will be fine-- no concern there.

I don't know how drumpf thinks he can make a half-way decent showing, since he doesn't know squat. Should be interesting.

They say that Trump is unable to sit down and actually learn or listen, unable to pay attention: good luck trying to prep him for this!

"Look. We're gonna have a good military, we're gonna have the best military. We're gonna get the bad guys and be the best military in the world, believe me."

She's going to annihilate him on Foreign Affairs/ National Security. Not a good way to try to dig yourself out of a deep hole.

His campaign cannot control the message here so he should be good for some dandy comments.

"In fact, anyone who requests Gold Star status will be immediately deported. They're bad people. Very, very bad people. You know? Am I right? Of course I'm right."

So Trump will get his ass kicked and never even face his opponent. Cool.

if they poll the group after the event Trump would win because so many veterans are Republicans.

My guess is that these Commander-in-Chief Forums are probably here to stay - and that's on top of the 'foreign policy and national security' debate already included de rigeur among the three principal ones.

Can't have too much militarism I guess; actually doing something for our veterans - that's another story.

And yes, while the state does quite a bit for veterans, too many corners are still cut and far too many still fall through the cracks.

Even if Hillary wins decisively, I certainly don't expect that to change while Rethugs control Congress (even just the House).

Really, I know he's totally ignorant, but goddess, agreeing to debate on veterans. Doesn't he see how Clinton will DESTROY him on that? Heck, he's already pre-destroyed himself and everyone knows and won't forget. His claims of "I honored the son" just doesn't get it when he demeaned the father and mother so badly and his cohorts also accused both the son and father of being terrorists. Nope, that will be front and center and how could Drumpf think he can dodge that? HRC has done so much for veterans and he's done absolutely nothing, actually it's worse than nothing, he's in negative territory. Wonder if Ailes will actually get him to study, or will he just blow him off since he's got "his beautiful brain".

Trump knows that in the Republican mind, a woman couldn't possibly look after veterans as well as a man - especially a 'librul' woman. He'll try to play to those little notions of theirs as much as he can.
