San Diego to Spray in South Park for Mosquito That Can Carry Zika Virus
Source: NBC 7 San Diego
County vector officials began placing door hangers on about 100 homes, advising residents of plans to begin spraying some time during the day on Friday.
San Diego County officials will be spraying a two-block area of South Park after discovering the larvae from a mosquito known to be a carrier of the Zika virus, NBC 7 has learned.
County vector officials went door to door Thursday notifying residents that the spraying will take place Friday morning. The area in question is between 31st and 32nd streets and Grape and Elm streets.
NBC 7 has learned that a person who lives in South Park recently traveled abroad and did not contract the mosquito borne illness in San Diego. A county spokesperson says the case in South Park could turn out to be any number of mosquito borne illnesses, but suspect Zika or Dengue virus, because of the discovery of the Aedes larvae.
County officials want to make it clear, the Aedes larvae did not test positive for any disease, nor were any adult mosquitoes trapped nearby.
A county spokesperson says vector officials look for Aedes larvae and adult mosquitoes each time a suspected case is identified. This is the first time the county has found Aedes larvae close to a suspected case.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County officials Thursday advised South Park residents of a plan to hand-spray a two-block area in order to prevent an outbreak of mosquito-borne diseases.
The spraying is scheduled for Friday morning in a neighborhood bounded by Grape Street on the north, Elm Street on the south, 31st Street to the west and 32nd Street to the east.

The sick resident traveled to a country where tropical diseases like chikungunya, dengue fever and the Zika virus are active, and developed symptoms upon returning home. State officials are expediting tests to determine if the person has a mosquito-borne disease.
County vector control said the pesticide, Pyrenone 25-5, poses low risks to people and pets. However, people who would prefer to avoid or minimize their exposure to the pesticide can take simple steps:

FOX 5 spoke with the resident, who asked to remain anonymous. He said he traveled to Costa Rica and Guadalajara.
"I had diarrhea and I went rafting so I figured I swallowed a lot of water. I had some body aches and pains but again, maybe I slept wrong. Everything had an excuse and then I had conjunctivitis in both eyes -- pink eye -- and thats when they raised the question. So, I saw a doctor and they tested me for it.
Meanwhile, the resident said he's also been advised to follow certain guidelines.
"They want me to wear long sleeves and pants and avoid any areas that have mosquitoes. They told me no sex with women who intend on being pregnant in the next year.
Currently, there is no positive diagnosis for any mosquito-borne illness. The man expects to find out results in two weeks.
