U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte has issued an apology for claiming he was robbed at gunpoint early Sunday morning after a night of partying, when in actuality he and three teammates were detained at gunpoint after vandalizing a Rio gas station.

At least it's an attempt to show contrition. Let's be thankful for
what we are given. But, sheesh.

Question: Would Lochte go for it or would he refuse out of ethical considerations?

(Not that he had me before that, mind you, I've stayed out of these threads so far but what an immature clueless thing to do - not just trashing the bathroom but the unnecessary lies. What a jackass. Just piss behind a dumpster if you have to go that bad.)

(59,504 posts)1) There is no apology to Rio, the gas station that they vandalized, or the police he defamed.
2) He completely ignores the actions that started the entire problem. Vandalizing a bathroom is NOT caused by a language barrier or having a gun pulled. Would he think it ok to do this in NC?
Not mentioning any of that -- and speaking of the actions of others (ie the gas station security) -- negates that he is taking responsibility. This essentially apologies just for the lying - ignoring that he and the others, shook up as they were by the guns -- actually were given a big break by being allowed to go after paying money to compensate for the damage. If he had a brain in his head, he and the others would have gone back and stayed silent - thanking their lucky stars that this did not lead to an embarrassing arrest.
I hope every one of his sponsors drops him for cause.

I hear he already drives a black Rolls Royce.

(7,004 posts)I read that they had to fork over $400. There are videos from security cameras in the city showing 30 other people being casually robbed. Also, the police have edited the video from the gas station.
Gun point, money, scared silly, Rio making a minced statement into an international incident. I think Rio just screwed any chances of making bank with tourists for the foreseeable future.
They should let those other Olympic Athletes get on the fastest jet out of there and restore any semblance of being a decent host.

On edit: I just read that they are all home but one of them had to pay $11,000 to not rot in a Brazilian prison for 6 months.

(7,004 posts)An edited video doesn't look good for the police.
By grabbing 2 guys off the plane home, they scared the sh*t out of everyone.
To me that says beginning of international incident. The way to deal with it is by issuing a statement that Lochte was lying and meeting with the Olympic committee to decide what measures would be taken.

(11,631 posts)The beginning was his completely bullshit story that he told to anyone that would listen.

(604 posts)The swimmers themselves told this to police. And THEY asked the gas station staff and security NOT TO CALL POLICE to preserve their images. The gas stations staff accepted and let them go after paying for damages.
Not their fault if the idiot decided to tell lies to his mommy and embarass Brazil calling international press to make up stories about being robbed by fake policemen.
And, no, they didn't have the pay US$ 11,000. They may have, the case is ongoing. They've paid nothing but compensation for their damages at the gas station.

(1,214 posts)When I was in graduate school, I went on a trip abroad with a member of faculty and about a dozen undergraduates. I was closer in age to the professor than I was to any of the other students, so I was a sort of "unofficial" chaperone. The behavior of most was perfectly fine, but there were a couple who we constantly had to address (one a student argued with local custom officials at a border crossing; a few instances of minor vandalism in national parks; and at least one scuffle at a bar where a local security guard intervened and asked them to leave. Somehow nobody was arrested with that last one, but the guard had to say he would call police and then things wouldn't be so easy).
These athletes remind me of those students, stereotypical "ugly Americans."

(3,764 posts)Yes, they were drunk, probably obnoxious. Broke the door.
Yes, they needed to pay for the damage.
But I heard that they did have a gun pointed at them and they were forced to hand over $400.
Probably as they saw it they we're robbed at gunpoint.
$400!!!!!??? For a door?
The broken door sounds like a excuse to extort as much money out of them as possible.
I think his apology is more than enough.

(12,232 posts)CASH PAID IN COMPENSATION
Veloso, Rio's police chief, said police investigations had shown that the swimmers had broken a mirror and a soap-holder in the bathroom, adding that they then handed over a total of 100 reais ($31) and $20 in U.S. currency as compensation.
According to Lochte's account, $400 was stolen from them.

(659 posts)400 doesn't seem that bad. I have no idea what contractors in Brazil would charge. But unless you DIY, the cost of the door and the labor could quite easily come to 400 in this country.

(7,358 posts)Yeah, this is how it works in the good ole U.S.A. Instead of reprimanding bad behavior .. we celebrate it. HUH? This is the mindset of the American public and our narcissistic entertainment media. So Lochte will make some royalties off the re-runs of his reality show. Go figure.

(19,240 posts)and then lets them free to "vandalize" again.
Politically correct or not, they were robbed by someone in police uniform. If a foreigner was stopped by a traffic cop and told to empty his wallet or go to jail, would that be justice? No, it would be official corruption.

Arrest them? Then there's all that negative hoopla, the cost of feeding them, having to put up with their annoying whining. Better to have them pay the damages and leave. And don't come back.
I once paid a traffic fine to the cop that pulled me over. No court visit, just a ticket and a receipt. Easy for all parties. This was in Germany, a long time ago. For the record, I committed the offense, the cop was professional, no guns were drawn.
