Rio tickets scandal: IOC's Hickey held in Bangu Prison

Source: BBC

Senior Olympic official Pat Hickey is being held in a notorious Rio prison following his arrest over alleged illegal sales of tickets for the games.

Mr Hickey, 71, was detained by Brazilian police on Wednesday but was then taken to hospital for tests after he complained of health problems.

After police questioning, Mr Hickey was denied bail by a judge and moved to maximum security Bangu 10 prison.

He denies the claims but has stepped down from all his posts temporarily.

My guess is stealing tickets and selling them at a discount. Ace Rothstein Aug 2016 #11

Super max prison? Lochte was right to get the hell out of there when he did.

Too bad this guy didn't make it out of the country before being found hiding at his hotel. No wonder he was hiding. I hope he gets back to Ireland to face charges.

I've traveled extensively through Central and South America. I never made it to Brazil and now I'm not sure I want to.

We're talking about a 70 year old man with heart problems. Putting him in prison with the most violent criminals in the country.

I hope Ireland is working feverishly to get him release. If anything happens to him in custody, all hell will break loose.

...is like something out of a bad prison movie. Google it. It's scary!
Even a short stay will probably kill this guy.

But no one seems bothered by it. No responses to this thread (save yours).

Yet I see thread after thread about how solitary confinement for murders in a US prison is torture.

Wow.

...gives meaning to the word 'torture.'

Not only that, they have a reputation of falsely imprisoning people at sporting events. I'll bet there are more Olympic spectators that ended up in this prison in the past few weeks than anybody even knows about.

bars for years. He's the Sepp Blatter of the Irish Olympic Committee world, getting into (and staying in) office by keeping the Officials/Cronies in the smaller associations (Judo, Archery etc) sweet, just like Blatter had all the 3rd world countries in his pocket, to the detriment of Irish Olympic Sport. He was answerable to no one, and in fact at the start of the week he effectively gave the two fingers to our Sports Minister, who wanted an independent person on the "OCI Inquiry team". Hickey told Shane Ross what he could do with himself.

You need to have a heart to have heart problems. If he suffering in any way, it's the thought of all the money and power that may be lost to him. His temporary replacement/crony as OCI President has already said they'll back him to the hilt.
