Coach, Teen Dead In Hermiston: Woman Shot

Source: East Oregonian

Kenneth E. Valdez was killed at his home at 130 Northwest 11th Street. A 35-year-old woman, not yet identified by police, was also found at the scene with a gunshot wound and taken to the hospital after giving a “detailed statement” to police.

Jason E. Huston, who volunteered alongside Valdez as an assistant wrestling coach at Hermiston High School, was found dead at the home from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. Hermiston Police Chief Jason Edmiston said the department is not searching for other suspects.

Police searched throughout the day for James “JJ” Hurtado, 14, who police said was “related to one of the parties involved.” Hurtado’s body was found around 8 p.m. in a “remote, rugged area outside of Hermiston,” according to a release from Edmiston. Hurtado was last seen at 10 a.m. when Huston picked him up in Umatilla and said they were going to play disc golf at McNary Park.

Huston, 45, was arrested in 2009 for menacing and unlawful possession of a firearm. The state dropped the menacing charge and he was sentenced to a year of probation and 20 hours of community service after pleading no contest to the gun charge.

With a gun, if you're unhappy, you can take along a lot of people with you. Thoughtful. n/t Judi Lynn Aug 2016 #9

If I had to make a wild speculation, it would be that there was inappropriate contact between the coach and student, which perhaps the other coach found out about.

If so, thankfully a gun resolved everything, and the killer coach doesn't have that situation hanging over his head anymore.

Well, the story is coming out that the 14 year old was the son of his ex-girlfriend.

The ex was the woman who survived the shooting, and the killer apparently found the other coach in bed with her.

Jason E. Huston told the grandparents of young athlete James 'JJ' Hurtado, 14, he was taking him to play a round of golf on Thursday morning.

Instead Huston, who had been in a relationship with Hurtado's mother Andria Bye and was like a 'father-figure' to the boy, took him out and ruthlessly shot him, police said.

The 45-year-old then drove round to the home of his friend, Kenneth E. Valdez, 44, and burst into the bedroom where he found Bye, 35, with his old school buddy and life-long friend.

Detectives say he opened fire on the couple, injuring Bye and killing Valdez before turning the gun on himself in the tragic murder suicide.

It's so horrible to imagine his last moments. His mother and her boyfriend deserved to be safe from a jealous ex with a gun, but it sounds like JJ was 100% utterly and completely blameless in this situation.
