In a speech to the Economic Club of New York in Manhattan, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump provided the latest iteration of his tax plan. And according to an accompanying fact sheet released by the Trump campaign, the businessman turned White House aspirant plans to dramatically scale back government regulations, including food safety and environmental measures, in order to save almost $1 trillion over the next decade.

Besides increasing each of his three tax brackets from their proposed 2015 levels, Trump said in order to pay for his $4.4 trillion in tax cuts he would eliminate the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan, the Waters of the United States rule aimed at protecting America’s waterways and existing limits on carbon pollution from power plants.

“The FDA Food Police, which dictate how the federal government expects farmers to produce fruits and vegetables and even dictates the nutritional content of dog food,” the Trump campaign fact sheet complained.

“The rules govern the soil farmers use, farm and food production hygiene, food packaging, food temperatures and even what animals may roam which fields and when,” the fact sheet continued. “It also greatly increased inspections of food ‘facilities,’ and levies new taxes to pay for this inspection overkill.”

Donald Trump recently attacked the Food & Drug Administration as the "food police." Who knows why he does what he does anymore, but it gave us a chance to hear some straight-up bull-goose looney libertarianism from Nick Gillespie of Reason:

You get rid of "official" food inspectors and you know what will happen? To the extent that customers demand any sort of certification beyond public reputation, private-sector and nonprofit groups will be created to provide this or that level of inspection. We see that already with kosher and halal food prep, of course, not to mention other sorts of watchdog groups (think Fair Trade coffee and the like). Yelp or some other rating system would likely add some sort of Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval-style process as well.

The yelpification of food poisoning! I can't put it any better than Kia on Twitter: "I would have given these diet pills one star but I am dead."

crazy talk. I was thinking it was because he only eats heavily processed food but then was reminded of the Jack in the Box and so many other fast food incidents.

I get the daily feed from the FDA of recalls (nut and peanut allergy in family so I want to be aware) - it is incredible how many there are.

Also complaining about pet food ingredients - so many people consider their pets to be family. They would go crazy if we started putting crap back into dog food without having to disclose ingredients. Remember the 2007 recall of more than 5300 pet food items (many from Canadian third party manufacturer Menu Foods.) They determined that the Chinese manufacturer had added melamine to the wheat gluten -- why?? Because it gave it a higher protein content. Imported into US by tiny LLC owned by husband and wife (who was from China). There were thousands of cases of renal failure and hundreds if not more reported deaths.
