Weekly Address: Celebrating the National Museum of African American History and Culture

Source: White House

In this week’s address, President Obama commemorated the opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The President recognized the museum for celebrating the many accomplishments of the African American community – and for telling the fuller story of America by facing the uncomfortable truths of our Nation’s history all while embracing the knowledge that America is a constant work in progress.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture not only tells the African American story – it tells the American story. By telling the fuller account of the American story, the President said, the museum will give all of us a chance to reflect and set the course for generations to come.

I donated several times over the past couple years (am a "charter member&quot and am so glad that they were able to get the funding and get it completed while he was still in office. One of my friends is down there now with her mother (who is close to being in her 90s now) to go during opening week (plus her brother lives there).

I know that Joe Madison was supposed to be broadcasting live at the opening events but haven't had chance to tune him in on SiriusXM. He had mentioned a couple weeks ago that Michael Jordan made a substantial donation ($5 million).

The opening ceremony literally just wrapped up as of ~12:30 pm. CSPAN will re-air at 8 pm ET tonight and they will have the streamed recording available on their website.

Thanks for the weekly post!!

President Barack Obama Hand-painted banner for Obama presidential campaign 2008 that was modified after 2008 Election results.

The museum brings visitors to the present day with a banner for Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. Hand-painted in New Haven, Connecticut, this banner is one of the artifacts honoring our nation’s first black president and his legacy.
