Kim Kardashian robbed of millions by Paris gunmen
Source: BBC
Kim Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint at a luxury residence in Paris by at least two men dressed as police officers, her publicist and police say.
A police spokesman said the haul from the robbery, mostly jewellery, was worth several million euros.
The robbery took place at about 03:00 local time (01:00 GMT).
A spokeswoman for Kardashian, 35, said the star was "badly shaken but physically unharmed". No-one else was hurt in the robbery, police said.

A Paris police official told the Associated Press that five armed men, who were still at large, stole a jewellery box containing valuables worth 6m (£5.2m) as well as a ring worth 4m. Police said the robbers escaped on bikes.
Franceinfo reported that Kardashian Wests bodyguard had been handcuffed during the incident.

I know she's famous for being famous, but robbery at gunpoint for millions is notable.

(111,255 posts)first, they hire the jewelry. Renting is cheaper than owning, especially owning and transporting.
Second, they use the hotel safe to keep it in. Or they'll use a bank while they're there.
This story fails the sniff test, honestly. "A" million I can understand, but "millions?" These aren't the Crown Jewels and she's no Liz Taylor married to an overindulgent Richard Burton.
And yes, I have a great deal of sympathy for anyone who has gotten robbed, at gunpoint or even in a garden variety pickpocket or purse grabbing. Thieves suck and they make life suck. I just question the amount.

(9,350 posts)If you are talking about the short story about the woman who lost a fake diamond necklace, bought a real diamond to replace the fake diamond, and then worked years of hard labor to pay off the debt only to find out the diamond she lost was fake that was Maupassant. Flaubert may have also written about women in financial distress.

Me too.

(15,512 posts)Seems it's a well-worn plot LOL. The version I had in mind is a novella by Louise de Vilmorin called "Madame de" that was made into a movie called "The Earrings of Madame De" in the 1950s. The plot involves a lady of quality who falls into debt and fakes the theft of a pair of diamond earrings given to her by her husband which she discretely sells back to the jeweler who first sold them to Monsieur who buys them a second time after the theft gets in the papers and the jeweler pays a call. Monsieur then gives them to a parting mistress who sells them to a dealer in Constantinople who sells them to an Italian diplomat named Donati who falls in love with Madame De and gives her the earrings and we're just getting started . . . .
p.s. les bijoux:

(16,296 posts)The lady is going to a ball that will have important people in attendance. Her husband tells her not to fuss and she is beautiful and needs no fine jewelry. Not satisfied she goes to her rich , childhood friend who tells her to pick out anything she likes from her jewelry box. She finds a diamond necklace and asks to borrow that and her friend tells her to enjoy herself.
She goes to the dance and has a magical time . On return to their apartment, she discovers the necklace is missing and panic mode sets in. She goes to a jeweler who sells her an identical one on credit at an astronomical price. When she returns the necklace her friend just throws it - with a dismissive air -into the jewelry box with a comment that she should have returned it sooner.
Paying for the necklace involves poverty, moving to a cheaper apartment, and austerity to the max. She takes in menial jobs and literally works herself and her husband to death. But after years, the necklace is paid for.
As she is sitting in the park, she recognizes her rich friend and decides to tell her of her sacrifices . Her friend is , at first unable to recognize her due to her changed, haggard appearance, tells her that the necklace she lent was paste.
A good short story - thanks for reminding me

(25,242 posts)Sounds iike a set-up job to grab headlines away from Trump (as she noticed she dropped from the headlines with all the emphasis now on Trump) and reap the benefit of insurance money.
Why would one leave so much jewelery unprotected in a Paris Hotel?
Sounds fishy to me!!!!

The jewelry industry can do amazing things these days with simulants, synthetics, some even surpassing their 'real' counterparts. At a very small fraction of the cost.

A lot of the stolen jewelry wasn't even hers, it was loaned to her for fashion week.

(9,350 posts)I think this was an inside job. I realize these men were dressed as police, but how did they get into her apartment? Yes, they had the guard tell them where she was staying, buy how did they get into her apartment? Where were her bodyguards?
Is it possible the West's are strapped for cash? I watched a TV program about insurance fraud. It was stated that sometimes what seems to be a robbery is in reality a way to get money from an insurance company. The person/family will claim their items were stolen, put in an insurance claim, and once they get the money the items will show up once again.
