U.S. Navy destroyer again targeted by missiles from Yemen: U.S. officials

Source: Reuters

A U.S. Navy destroyer was targeted on Wednesday in a failed missile attack from territory in Yemen controlled by Iran-aligned Houthi rebels, the second such incident in the past four days, U.S. officials told Reuters.

The USS Mason, which was accompanied by the USS Ponce - an amphibious transport dock - fired defensive salvos in response to the missiles, neither of which hit the ship or caused any damage as it operated north of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

SA is destroying Yemen; slaughtering Houthis by the scores with weapons they bought from us, while we stand aside and watch from offshore.

SA needs to back the fuck off now.

I try to put myself in their mindset - what do they have to lose at this point? I certainly sympathize with their plight.

SA is committing genocide in Yemen, and the US is acquiescing, at best. Apparently, when the rubber hits the road, we have very little leverage over SA.

But to blame the US for what SA is doing is like shooting at a gun shop owner when a gun he sold is used in a robbery and shoots a member of the family.

Guilt is collective, it's shared by all outsiders. Somebody hits a member of your team, everybody--anybody else outside your team--can be punished for it.

Hatfield and the McCoys, communalism, collective punishment. Lots of words for it, and it used to be not that uncommon in Western cultures. Still is in some of them--whenever you see riots that target outsiders in general, that's the mindset. And it's an ugly one.

the naval blockage the US naval is helping to impose on those poor people. I too can completely understand why the Yemenis would want to sink every single one of those hostile ships

Pentagon says radar sites were attacked after the destroyer
USS Mason came under attack and notes ‘we will respond
to any further threat

The United States has launched its first strike on Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen in retaliation for days of attacks on a navy warship, becoming an active combatant in a brutal war led by Washington’s ally Saudi Arabia.

The Pentagon announced late on Wednesday that it struck and destroyed three radar sites controlled by the Iranian-backed Houthi movement in Yemen. The sites were described as being involved in two missile attacks over the past four days on the destroyer USS Mason, operating out of the Bab al-Mandeb waterway between Yemen and east Africa.

There was no immediate word on any casualties from the US attack on the radar sites, which the Pentagon noted came with the direct authorization of Barack Obama.

“These limited self-defense strikes were conducted to protect our personnel, our ships, and our freedom of navigation,” Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said.

and if whatever mission they were doing was worth the possible risk of a lucky hit... But it sounds like they were pretty far out there and these missiles traveled a good distance, aye?
