Dems Raise $13K To Rebuild Firebombed Republican Party Office In North Carolina
Source: Talking Points Memo
In a display of solidarity, Democrats on Sunday raised some $13,117 to held rebuild a local North Carolina Republican Party office that was destroyed in a firebombing.
Organized by David Weinberger, a research fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School, the GoFundMe campaign surpassed the $10,000 fundraising goal in under 40 minutes. The effort was inspired by a tweet from University of North Carolina professor Zeynep Tufekci, who called on Hillary Clinton's campaign to lend office space to staffers at the Orange County GOP headquarters, which was left gutted and unusable.
Nazi Republicans leave town or else was painted in graffiti on an adjacent building, along with a swastika.

"Act of political terrorism", indeed. The Clinton campaign should let the GOP take over one of its offices so no time is lost for them.

Other Democratic academics, including Arizona State University professor Dan Gillmor and City University of New York journalism professor Jeff Jarvis helped coordinate the effort. As Jarvis wrote on the GoFundMe page, This is a moment for graciousness, not fractiousness.

Still, bravo to Dems for doing the classy thing.

(601 posts)This is what they are in 2016. They have to cheat to win (gerrymandering). That state is going blue for the first time in ages and they're panicking. No way would Dems do that. It was their own slimebags.

(63,210 posts)It's not a "tiny cynical" part of me that suspects that this was an inside job: I'm actually strongly confident that it was an inside job, for exactly the reasons you cite.

(4,490 posts)Not that they are able to take advantage anyway. The Democrats are coming out of this looking like reasonable, empathetic adults, while certain Republicans may have gotten themselves in trouble by suggesting they were doing something that is illegal.
Republicans doing it themselves isn't too crazy, we've seen some incredibly stupid and convoluted schemes from state and local level morons before. Now with Trump, he empowers those sorts. At the same time though, someone as vile as him is also likely to attract more extreme, and unhinged, opposition to. So it's not like a lone angry person is out of the question either.

These gestures are important to emphasize that we are U.S. citizens, and our democracy is important to us.

The republicons would NEVER do such a thing, they can't take a chance of being Nice or Human, they'd lose their base. I'm fairly sure they will, however, be blaming the Dems on this because of the fact the Dems tried to help them. So they will say it's proof that the Dems did it because they tried to Fix it, right? Always a negative spin on any act of kindness or fair play. It's amazing how stupid the people are in this country that buy into these lies.

(2,146 posts)As this unfolds, with the latest being that the NC GOP claims there were ballots in the office (illegal, BTW) this gesture of assistance could also expose this "Firebombing" as a false flag. Which is what I think it is...
treestar
(82,383 posts)would mean they are trying to make it look like it was to interfere in the vote. Yet they should not have any ballots there, so they didn't think of that.

(11,297 posts)Each one of those precious dollars and cents could have gone to Democratic GOTV efforts and waking up people to what is going on and voting Democratic.
What a catastrophic mistake.

(7,629 posts)It will be taken by the deplorables as an admission of guilt. Not to mention this money could be used to help the local down ballot races.
