Dem senator praises US steel after car crash

Source: The Hill

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and a staffer were treated for minor injuries Thursday afternoon after a car crash in a Cleveland suburb, according to Cleveland.com.

A car ran a stop sign and collided with Brown’s 2016 Jeep Cherokee in Parma, Ohio, while Brown’s staffer, Will Young, was driving. The car took heavy damage from the collision and deployed its airbags.

Brown and Young were transported to the hospital via ambulance, treated for minor injuries and released soon after, according to Brown spokeswoman Jennifer Donahue. Brown’s dog, Franklin, was in the back of the vehicle, restrained by a harness, and was unharmed.

Brown, ranking Democrat on the Senate Banking Committee and one of the Senate’s most ardent progressives, praised American manufacturing and government regulations for keeping him safe

Had the worst happened one of the most progressive Senators would have been replaced by a republican. Affecting the entire world.

But no criticism intended. I respect where your heart resides and I am also glad the dog was unharmed.

Have a nice evening.

Chinese steel isn't just cheaper because of no OSHA and trade favors, no environmental regs, etc, it is also lower quality crap "steel".

AND U.S. made steel is better for the environment:

(Don't mean to jump on you, but I am opinionated about the whole 'steel is steel" thing)

GLAD that the Senator and aide - and dog- are okay. Cars are so much safer now than they used to be (though they used to have a lot more, you know, actual steel in them!)

Its the design of cars to crumple that make them more resistant to crash and not the steal quality itself.

The point is a bit ridiculous really even if I agreed companies should be using local steel.

Chinese Steel Fails Strength Test
http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/80635517/Chinese-steel-fails-strength-test

-------------

In the specific case of bridges, six have collapsed across China since July 2011. The official Xinhua news agency has acknowledged that shoddy construction and inferior building materials were contributing factors.

When California bought Chinese steel to renovate and expand the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, for a project that began in 2002, problems like faulty welds by a Chinese steel fabricator delayed the project for months and led to huge cost overruns. Those delays eroded much of the savings California was banking on when it opted for the “cheap” Chinese steel.

A simple Google search has many more examples.

Like everything done in China, you can get good production if you have decent local oversight. Like doing random testing of the produced steel to see if it meets specified standards and not taking their words for it.

Shoddy construction happens if you cut corner. Even in China, you can get high quality steel if you pay the price for it.
But, the construction industry in China is notoriously corrupt and linked to the communist party, so you get a lot of crap being built with little oversight with predictable results.

There are high quality goods (like most electronic goods and many industrial goods) and utter crap produced in China, it's a manufacturing and industrial powerhouse so there is a lot of everything.

Blanket affirmations doesn't help local manufacturers because they know that if all they produced was really bad work, they could actually compete in the high end of the market.

I, nor anyone else, has said all Chinese steel is weaker.

However, stories from around the world (I gave you three examples from New Zealand, China and the US, with many more I could provide) show that Chinese steel is vastly inferior because of projects they were used in failed or had to be replaced because of problems with the steel.

Even you admit there is a problem with Chinese steel.

Anti-Trade deals is the last comfortable refuge of xenophobia done by the left and right.
It is a paternalistic father knows best, white man's burden (sic), attitude vs rest of the world.

Anyway, I think we can ignore each other cause an actual argument seems impossible from your tone here. Bye.
