What’s in a Name? When It’s ‘Trump Place,’ It’s a Revolt

Source: NY Times

At three large rental buildings emblazoned with gold letters spelling out T-R-U-M-P P-L-A-C-E on the Upper West Side, the lobby rain mats embossed with the same name are being replaced, tenants say. The new versions, they have been told, will proclaim the buildings’ addresses, 140, 160 or 180 Riverside Boulevard.

At the same buildings, they say, the doormen and concierges have been measured for new uniforms that will no longer carry the Trump name.

And 300 people, most of them tenants, have signed an online petition titled “Dump the TRUMP Name” in less than 10 days.

Marjorie Jacobs, a retired teacher who lives at 180 Riverside Boulevard, is one of them. “It’s embarrassing to tell people where you live,” Ms. Jacobs said. “His name does not need to be on the front of the building.”

I hope they get the name off. I guess this is going on in a lot of places, thank goodness. BTW: walked thru Trump Tower after reading that Esquire article posted here. It still looks just like the writer described. And almost half of the people who were in the quite vacant place were people who worked in his political office, and most of the other half were tourists. I was not sad it all looked so depressing....

I think he thought a presidential run with a populist message would EnHANCE his Brand...problem is he has horrible Judgment and even worse character.. parading it around 24 7 has shown unmasked the man behind the brand.. and it's not pretty.. can we say sleazy racist ignorant conspiratorial pathological lying a hole?..not sure i'd want to be associated with those words branded across my doorstep. i sincerely hope he goes bankrupt again and is forced to parade his failure publicly in front of all his disillusioned supporters..so they can hurtle rotten tomatoes at him as he passes naked through the street of NY..

Trump, as his usual asshole self, sadistically destroyed the artistic sculptures from the iconic BT building rather than give them to the gallery up the street that was begging for them.

Donald’s Demolition: Reckless Jackhammering of Artistic Heritage to Make Way for the First Trump Tower.

What to do with some iconic sculptures on the façade of a historic building that is being razed for a new glass tower? Well, you could remove them intact and give them to the museum just blocks up the street. Or you could forget about salvaging architectural remains altogether and just smash them along with the rest of the building. This is exactly what happened in 1980 when presidential candidate Donald Trump, then a 33 year-old real estate developer, appeared in the New York Times as the man responsible for destroying two Art Deco sculptures that had been promised to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Where you see dirt and garbage is now a beautiful park with trails for runners or dog walkers. They're beautiful buildings with outstanding views but c'mon, Upper West Side of Manhattan? One of the most liberal areas of the entire city. I know someone who lives in one of them and has, no doubt, signed that petition to remove don the con's name.

They moved in because they're beautiful apartments with spectacular views - it had ZERO to do with the name of the building. They're also rentals so I have no idea where greed comes in.

Google Maps Street View shows five buildings that have been defaced by his name - the three in this story are in the middle of the row. Do all five buildings' tenants want Trump's toxic name off their homes, or are the ones on the ends okay with it?

the rental agent is sensitive to any issue that could cause them problems in renting out apartments. In the greater scheme of things, the name's only worth the business it had brought. With its cachet cratering, it's becoming a liability. So acting on the petition was in their immediate best interest, and made the current tenants happy.

The other two, 120 and 200, are condominium properties, so removing the name would likely be up to a consensus of the collective owners of the apartments. (And they would be the ones directly footing the bill to effect the change, with new signage, employee uniforms etc.)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika_Laundry

The Swastika Laundry was a laundry founded in 1912, located on Shelbourne Road, Ballsbridge, a district of Dublin, Ireland. It was founded by John W. Brittain (1872–1937) from Manorhamilton, County Leitrim who was one of the "pioneers of the laundry business in Ireland" having founded the Metropolitan and White Heather Laundries in 1899. He was also the owner of a famous horse called Swastika Rose which was well known "to frequenters of the Royal Dublin's Society's Shows".[1]

They used electric vans, that were painted in red with a black swastika on a white background,[2] to collect and deliver laundry to customers. The electric vans used by the Swastika Laundry were quite ahead of their time.[1]

In 1939, the laundry changed its name to "The Swastika Laundry (1912)"[3] to make clear the distinction between its use of the name and the symbol and the recent adoption of the symbol by the Nazi Party in Germany
