Sgt. Paul Parizek, a public information officer with the Des Moines Police Department, told reporters there was a "clear and present danger to police officers" and that a suspect remained on the run.

He added that there did "not appear that there was any interaction between these officers and the coward who shot them."

Parizek said the officers "were gunned down when they were sitting in their cars."

Trump has let loose the crazies.

We had a woman shot here in KC yesterday while she was driving in the down town loop. Just random.

I worry a little about what might happen after the election. Some people (read: Trump supporters) are unhinged.

Trump is being highly irresponsible propagating this rigged election meme because his followers believe him and in the likely event that he loses some of his unhinged followers may engage in violence.

On a deeper level, we should be worried that more and more Americans are turning to extremism of various stripes. I don't know what it is with this country. I am guessing that the fallout from the Great Recession combined with our often uncaring, hyper-competitive, socially isolating society causes disturbed people to seek meaning and answers in extreme ideologies. Some of these people then act on their dark impulses as happened in this case.

Scott Michael Greene, the 46-year-old suspect in the killings of two police officers early Wednesday, apparently had previous encounters with Urbandale police officers, according to court records about a man with the same name and date of birth as the suspect.

and

The complaint does not indicate why officers initially came into contact with Greene. But two days later he reportedly threatened to kill a man in the parking lot of the same apartment complex and he was charged with first-degree harassment, according to another complaint.

In that incident, Greene was accused of approaching a man in the parking lot and shined a flashlight in his eyes. Greene, who lived in the apartments, called the man the N-word and told the man “I will kill you, (expletive) kill you,” according to the complaint. Greene pleaded guilty to a lesser harassment charge on June 30, 2014, and was sentenced to one year of probation.

Well, there it is. (bold added)

This story has already been buried in the latest news cycle. How much do you want to bet if the shooter weren't white, the news would be talking about it at least into the weekend?
