Obama Suggests Some Men Don't Like Clinton Because She's A Woman

Source: Talking Points Memo

By CAITLIN MACNEAL Published NOVEMBER 2, 2016, 6:33 AM EDT

During a campaign rally in Columbus, Ohio, on Tuesday, President Obama asked male voters to examine why it is they may not support Hillary Clinton, suggesting that sexism keeps some voters from backing Clinton.

"You know there’s a reason why we haven’t had a woman president before and I think sometimes we’re kind of trying to get over the hump," he said. "And we have to ask ourselves as men — because I hope my daughters are going to be able to achieve anything they want to achieve. And I know that my wife is not just my equal but my superior."

"I want every man out there who’s voting to kind of look inside yourself and ask yourself. If you’re having problems with this stuff, how much of it is you know that we’re not just used to it?" Obama asked the crowd. The President then argued that Clinton is subjected to a double standard because she is a woman.

"When a guy's ambitious and out in the public arena and working hard well that’s okay, but when a woman suddenly does it, suddenly you’re all like – well why’s she doing that? I’m just being honest. I want you to think about it because she is so much better qualified than the other guy. She has conducted herself so much better in public life than the other guy," he said. "This notion that somehow it's hard to choose, it shouldn't be."

and not just men. i've seen interviews with women saying women shouldn't be in positions of power. but i think it's mostly men terrified of losing the patriarchy. i don't know how many there are for whom that would decide their vote.

I'm still surprised when I hear women say that about other women. My late aunt used to say that - she was a very nice person overall, but was a conservative Catholic and didn't think women should be in leadership positions (this was probably early 2008 when Hillary was competing with Obama.)

That's their reason. They'd like for the first woman president to be pretty and young.

So if you're a woman, that's telling of how republicans in politics and in business size up women. Experience and temperament mean less than good looks and age.

As a person who some people don't like because he's not a white person, I imagine that the president knows whereof he speaks!

The very notion that "liking" her is important or even relevant carries a whiff of sexism. Decades of hate-media propaganda, though, have been designed to invoke a visceral revulsion on cue.
