Falwell Jr. says Trump offered him education secretary job

Source: AP

Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. says president elect-Donald Trump offered him the job of Secretary of Education, but he turned it down for personal reasons.

Falwell told The Associated Press on Saturday that Trump offered him the job last week during a meeting in New York. He says Trump wanted a four- to six-year commitment, but Falwell says he couldn't leave Liberty for more than two years.

Falwell says he couldn't afford to work a cabinet-level job in Washington for longer than that and didn't want to move his family, especially his 16-year-old daughter.

I know Falwell could simply be lying - that wouldn't be unusual for him. But if it's true, this means Trump isn't just showing the complete nutcases like Falwell as a way of scaring people and making his actual picks look less extreme; he really wanted a guy who runs a dominionist Christian madrassah to be in charge of American education.

Oh, and Falwell, who claims to follow a religion of modesty, thinks he can't live on a cabinet secretary's salary.

past few months of several Liberty students objecting to Falwell Jr.'s playing lapdog to Trump.

Those students showed a lot of maturity in their objection while Falwell Jr. was licking The Donald's boots.

4. And Falwell's reaction showed just how unsuitable he is for Education Secretary

Junior Joel Schmeig wrote an anti-Trump column that Falwell removed from the school newspaper.
...
While Falwell insisted his endorsement was personal — federal law prohibits tax-exempt organizations from campaigning — student Dustin Wahl, who wrote the Liberty United Against Trump petition, said he felt the line was too blurred.

Obviously, Falwell was breaking the tax exemption rules, just like his hero, and also suppressing independent thought in his 'university'.

them were on-board in that position, enough were that it was truly refreshing.

The place still has a lot of young people in concentration, and not all of them are automatons for Jesus. Some of them may be reading their New Testaments a lot more carefully and thoughtfully than Falwell Jr.

More power to 'em.

Thank God, or rather, thank Mammon, that Falwell turned the job down; but it just shows the Unspeakable's mindset.

Over and done with years after having bilked so many enrollees out of their life saving, Trump now poses as fully qualified to choose whoever he wishes for education secretary. Do these back-to-back events qualify for an "Only in America" tag, or is America so morally bankrupt that this irony passes without notice?
