Cooper lead grows beyond recount threshold
Source: WRAL.com
Raleigh, N.C. Attorney General Roy Cooper's lead grew to 10,257 votes over Gov. Pat McCrory on Wednesday, putting the race for North Carolina governor beyond the point where McCrory could automatically demand a recount.
All but six of North Carolina's 100 counties have completed their reporting from the Nov. 8 election. Cooper's lead will change when those counties report and could conceivably retreat back under the 10,000 mark. But throughout the county canvass process, Cooper's lead has steadily grown.
"Roy Cooper's lead has now grown to over 10,000 votes. Game over. Its time for Governor McCrory to concede. It's clear there is no path to victory for Governor McCrory. Its time for Governor McCrory to accept the election results and respect the will of the voters," said Trey Nix, Cooper's campaign manager.
The 10,000-vote mark is critical. If a statewide candidate loses by more fewer than 10,000 votes, he or she has the automatic right to a statewide recount. McCrory has said he will seek a statewide recount if the State Board of Elections doesn't order a recount in Durham County. If the margin remains above 10,000 votes, that potential bargaining power is undercut.

I wonder if Cooper will have to call out the National Guard to evict McCrory from the Governor's Mansion next month?

(31,384 posts)I hope Cooper has good security. The race for Lt. Governor is separate and the Republican won it by 300,000 votes--
which is a really giant fu*k you to McCrory-- but makes me hope that Cooper will have excellent security watching his back.

(5,269 posts)Maybe we NC Dems can finally celebrate if only McCrory would end his desperate shenanigans soon. R's don't want us to have any power whatsoever but fortunately Dem Josh Stein also won Atty Gen. by enough margin for no contest so Cooper will have a strong backup behind him going forward.
People underestimate how important these other races (AG, Secretary of State) can be in the long run.

(53,776 posts)I would think voters who voted repug for president would've vote repug for governor unless there was some hacking going on somewhere.
Trump the repug "won" North Carolina but McCrory the repug lost in North Carolina.
H-u-u-u-u-h?
Something's fishy.
Is that just me thinking that?

The current Lt. Governor--a Republican--won by 300,000 votes, which really rubs McCrory's nose in it.
There had to have been a lot of Republicans who voted against McCrory because he is so disliked.
It does make me nervous, though, that people didn't have the sense to also vote for the Dem for Lt. Governor
to protect Cooper's back.

(5,269 posts)"Just to shake things up." There are many voters who are very simplistic. Some of them didn't want McCrory simply because they blamed him for HB2 loss of sporting events and revenue and pushing toll roads, but didn't seem to understand the dangerous loss of checks and balances they were giving R's on the Federal level by voting for Trump and/or didn't care due to their Hillary hate and misogny.

(50,557 posts)North Carolina isn't most states. People voting for the Republican president and the Democratic everything else is so common there, the "straight ticket" vote doesn't cast a vote for president. You have to do that separately. They print on the ballot that this is how it works, hang up signs in the polls, put it in voter guides.

More of him would bankrupt the state.

BUT
How do you think Drumpf will respond? By a high ranking appointment to a sensitive position? Where he will not be constrained by a legislature?

For Senate & President, the opposite.
