WASHINGTON Donald Trumps new promise to work something out for young immigrants is dividing fellow Republicans, underscoring how difficult it will be for Congress to take any action on immigration, whether its building a wall or dealing with immigrant youths.
During the campaign Trump pledged to immediately terminate President Barack Obamas executive actions on immigration, including the 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, known as DACA, which has extended work permits and temporary deportation relief to more than 700,000 immigrants brought illegally to this country as youths. But in an interview in Time magazine, Trump adopted a far more sympathetic tone toward the young immigrants known to their supporters as Dreamers.
Were going to work something out thats going to make people happy and proud, Trump said. They got brought here at a very young age, theyve worked here, theyve gone to school here. Some were good students. Some have wonderful jobs. And theyre in never-never land because they dont know whats going to happen. Trump did not offer details, and Time said that he did not back off his pledge to undo Obamas executive actions.
Republicans whove supported congressional action to help immigrant youths welcomed Trumps new tone. I can tell you Im very relieved at his comments today and I think folks back home in my district and across the country are going to be very relieved as well, said Rep. Mike Coffman, R-Colorado. Obviously Dreamers is one part of the equation, I clearly hope we do more. But I think thats got to be the top priority.

That, or you'll be paying $10 for a box of strawberries and $5 each for a pepper because labor prices would be insane as the farmers scrambled to get hired hands.

(82,383 posts)IMO it is most deplorable not to pass the DREAM act. They rant on about legality, well, these were kids who could not have intent to violate the law. Which proves that for all their protests, they don't want legal immigrants either.

(53,339 posts)He's just latching onto any rationale, no matter how bad, for undoing DACA and deporting the Dreamers.

(82,383 posts)He should admit his xenophobia or racism. Punishing little kids for what their parents did is just deplorable. It's clear he sees them as part of a race, not as people.

(1,128 posts)Immigrants (especially illegal ones and Dreamers) often occupy jobs in this country that Americans do not want or are not qualified for. No deplorable is going to want to pick fruit and vegetables in a field or be handed a job that they do not have the education or qualification for. So, where are these businesses going to get their workforce?
