GOP introduces plan to massively cut Social Security

Source: Yahoo Finance

On Thursday, Rep. Sam Johnson, a Republican from Texas and chair of the Ways and Means Committee, introduced legislation to significantly cut Social Security.

The bill introduced by Johnson, who is also the chair of the Social Security subcommittee, slashes benefits, adds means testing, and would raise the retirement age from 67 to 69.

For most workers, the bill would cut Social Security benefits substantially. As Michael Linden, associate director for tax and budget policy at Center for American Progress, pointed out on Twitter, a letter from Social Security’s Office of the Actuary calculated workers making around $50,000 would see checks shrink by between 11% and 35%.

Nearly every income bracket would see a reduction, save for the very bottom. People making around $12,280 in 2016 who have worked for 30 years would see an increase of around 20%. But young people making the same amount would be hit hard by the changes. If they had 14 years of work experience by 2016, they would see their benefits cut in half.

review how that party with no program, no plan, no rational purpose gobbled up state legislature after state legislature.

but rarely make any headway with voters.
Hey, it's fun getting a laugh mocking them, but clearly we've missed the boat.
Clearly they've gotten something right with voters. They press the fear button endlessly and attack.
They picture us as weak and soft and it works.
Sadly, it works way too often and the current result shows just how well. A complete incompetent, heavily flawed oaf who's never help anyone in his life and doesn't pay taxes gets the highest office in the world.
We need to rethink strategies. And the current DNC isn't going to do it.

while we just keep dancing. They use the "guns" lie every election because its so effective for them. Yet we never do anything to effectively neutralize it. We need a strategy to neutralize the "guns" lie - we are losing lots of stupid people votes over it, and a stupid person vote counts just as much as a smart person vote. Trump supporters are more worried about their guns than they are their social security. Or are they? Maybe we really don't know that, because the Clinton campaign rarely mentioned social security at all - even though it could have been a huge fear factor in our favor if we had run ads about Paul Ryan's desire to destroy social security. Instead of spending ad money the great parts of the democrat platform, the Clinton campaign spent way more time calling Trump a racist. The Trump supporters didn't care about that at all. Most of them are racists, and the smarter voters could see that for themselves. All those racist and other negative ads were a waste of money because the dems didn't get out a message that the white working class wanted to hear.

If they present a bill that is SO heinous, then that's their starting point for negotiation. So they come back and say "Okay, we'll only raise the age to 68 instead of 69 and we'll only cut benefits for people under 35 right now instead of 49.

Not no but HELL NO.

Automation and shipping more jobs overseas is going to mean 40 to 50% fewer jobs in the next 10 to 20 years. We'll need seniors to retire earlier, not later.

There will surely be a big ruckus from the folk, and even if it manages to get through Congress, Obama would surely veto it.

Maybe this is a rehearsal. I hope that if the rabble is roused enough, the whole thing is through. If the level of outrage is not overwhelming, especially among their R-voters, they can do it again, perhaps with a little sweetener. i.e.; Hey, Mr. Congress Person, you know we're working on a trillion dollar infrastructure bill, wouldn't you like to see about 50 billion in your area?

but imo our side doesn't do that.

Like you said, we need to LOWER the retirement age to adapt to the structural changes in the economy everyone talks about, everyone tells us to "get used to it".' No, these structural changes that are taking our jobs are also causing astronomical profits, we need to share those gains and offset the job losses. That should be the Democrats' position on Social Security, but as far as I know, only Bernie has taken that position.

Its political suicide to make cuts at all, so if they do it they won't stop at the age of 49. Our current seniors are going to feel the squeeze too.

Hope Trump "keeps his word" or, more likely, we can find enough Republicans who don't want to lose their seats over it.

My wife and I are both receiving benefits that WE EARNED!! Now these clowns come along and think that we are "TAKERS" when in fact they are the real "TAKERS".. This shit is going to go on for at least 2 more years as the republicons try to upend the cart that is the livelihood of MILLIONS OF AMERICANS!! If they try and come close Ryan will have won another battle but not the war. We have to stand up to them at every turn. We can't let them get their feet into the social safety net door. I'm getting ready to write Durbin and my incoming Senator Tammy Duckworth. Don't know if it will do any good after the weak ass dems under Schumer punted on the 4 month extension WITHOUT any help for the retired miners so, I guess what I'm saying is if we can't count on dems to help retired miners how the hell can we count on them to help millions on social security, Medicare and Medicaid..Pretty FUCKING SAD!!
