North Dakota Democrat Top Of Trump's List For Agriculture Secretary, Gives GOP Another Senate Pick Up Opportunity

Guy and Cortney wrote about Republican John Kennedy, who won Louisianas senate race over the weekend. Neither the Republican nor the Democratic candidate in the Bayou State was able to get a majority of the vote on election night, so a runoff occurred. The GOP held the seat thats being vacated by Sen. David Vitter (R-LA). So, right now, Republicans control the Senate with a 52-48 majority. Yet, there could be another pick-up in the future if Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) is picked by President-elect Donald Trump to head the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The special election that would be held to replace her would most likely end with a GOP pick-up. To add more intrigue, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell spoke with North Dakota Rep. Kevin Cramer about running for Heitkamps seat. Whether it was due to the possibility of a special election or gearing up for the 2018 midterms wasnt specified in the piece written by Politicos Josh Dawsey, Andrew Restuccia, and Jenny Hopkinson:
Heitkamp, who met with the president-elect at Trump Tower on Dec. 2, is facing a tough race in a deep red state in 2018. In a further sign she is a strong contender for a Cabinet post, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell met with North Dakota Rep. Kevin Cramer on Tuesday about a potential open Senate seat. A source close to the transition said gaining another Republican Senate seat was on the list of reasons for picking Heitkamp.
Heitkamp's departure from the Senate would be bad news for Democrats as they try to hold onto every seat in the upper chamber that they can. Twenty-three Democrats and the two independent senators who caucus with them, Vermont's Bernie Sanders and Maine's Angus King, are up for reelection in two years, with five of the Democratic races considered competitive. Four others are in states that twice voted against Obama as well as for Trump, including North Dakota.

(14,449 posts)If she felt her seat was safe, I'm sure she wouldn't even entertain this. I still hope she says no. It's one seat closer to 60 repugs want in 2018. I can't believe the bad luck we have coming in 2018. All those trump states that have democratic senators are troubling. Democratic Voters are going to have to get to the polls next November like never before.

(289 posts)... then before 2018 is the best time for it. With so few seats in danger, they will probably still maintain a majority.

(14,308 posts)Bipartisan cred is great for a Democrat in North Dakota.
She can always say she quit when her ethics didn't allow her to stay if things go bad.

(1,375 posts)She is very PRO dapl and has been stated after the Obama administration denied easement to energy transfer partners, that she will fight for the pipeline in any way she can. I will probably get in trouble for saying that...but it's true. She leaned heavily on the Native vote, just so she could get in, when in my opinion, she just wanted the $$$ from dapl people. Errrrr.
"I understand the frustration of the protesters, I just think that this fight is not winnable," said the senator, adding that she hopes to continue her work to improve living conditions for Native American communities.
"We spent a lot of time talking about economic development, talking about energy, talking about regulation and what we need to do there, so it really was a very substantive discussion without a lot of details on positions in the Cabinet," she said.
Heitkamp said the two spoke a lot about jobs and highlighted Trump's "myopic focus on how he's going to get American workers back into the workplace [and] provide more economic security."
