Taiwan's president to visit US despite objections from China
Source: The Guardian
Taiwans president is planning to meet members of Congress next month during a stopover visit to the US that will go ahead despite strong Chinese government objections, a senior Taiwanese official has said.
China tried to block the visit by President Tsai Ing-wen in the wake of a row over perceived pro-Taiwan comments by the US president-elect, Donald Trump, who also held an unprecedented phone conversation with the Taiwan leader.
The visit has caused speculation in Washington and Taiwan that Tsai may meet Trump in person, or members of his transition team, during a nine-day trip that begins on 7 January and includes brief state visits to Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador.

(8,692 posts)Our schizophrenic approach to Taiwan has to end. We have supported Taiwan for decades, we have armed it to the teeth and we would risk nuclear war to defend it. Yet in matters of decorum we treat Taiwan like Jimmy Darmody.
China is far more distressed by our military aide to Taiwan than they are by mere courtesies.

I think it's up to the inhabitants and government of Taiwan how their country is run, and not mainland China. Hell, I saw an article that said the government was going to enter into a business relationship with a company on the mainland, and people were protesting. They want nothing to do with the mainland.
So China is going to complain no matter what. Might as well do something to further human freedom and not restricting it.
