Arctic temperatures soar to 30 C above normal
Source: CBC
The Arctic continues to run a fever.
On Thursday, the temperature there was almost 30 C warmer than average, and it continued into Friday morning. Ocean buoys recorded temperatures near the North Pole of 0 C or warmer. That's right: It's warmer in the Arctic than it is in Thunder Bay, Ont.

Not exactly breaking news of course. Just more of the same worrying trend.

(7,968 posts)the curves all show elbows from our perspective of the last 10 years or so. The Republican ignorance of climate change is about to get a lot more willful not that it isn't already.

(4,642 posts)and put parts of the lower 48 in a deep freeze. Will only get worse as climate change is just too complicated for wingnuts.

(6,154 posts)Climate scientists very smartly stopped using the term "global warming" a while back in favour of climate change because people too slow on the uptake actually wanted to use the argument that "it's snowing outside" the climate can't be warming etc. When indeed all along the models have shown as much as anything extreme unpredictability and the destabilization of regular climate patterns. Climate change deniers, wingnuts like to make the claim that the systems are just too complicated for us to understand and therefore there's no way to predict that we could be having an effect. The climate has "always" changed and other moronic arguments. Never mind the fact that the science of what we are actually doing to change the climate is actually exceedingly simple even if the outcome is not. We are increasing CO2 levels to those not seen for millions of years, full stop. That's GOING to have an effect. Sure the specifics of that effect are hard to predict exactly, but it isn't going to be good. The wing nuts arguments are kind of like saying there can't possibly be any effect of giving a speeding car an extremely sharp nudge because the physics of exactly where the car is going to end up is just too complicated, therefore there's no way said violent shove could possibly have a bad outcome. Umm no.
