Schools warn of increased student fears due to immigration arrests, Trump election

Source: Washington Post

December 26 at 5:26 PM

The schools chief in Prince George’s County recently warned educators that more students might be absent from class or struggle with increased fear amid what some see as stepped-up federal enforcement actions against immigrants.

Kevin Maxwell wrote that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers have been increasingly aggressive in their arrests of those facing deportation in Maryland, based on information from the public defender’s office. He gave principals and staff advice about talking to worried families and highlighted details about federal policy.

“The most important action you and your staff can take is reiterate that Prince George’s County Public Schools will continue to be safe places where students and families will be welcome without fear of harm,” he wrote in boldface type in the Dec. 7 letter.

Maxwell’s message came as school districts across the country are trying to help assure immigrant communities ahead of President-elect Donald Trump taking office in January. Many are scared that Trump — who put illegal immigration at the center of his campaign — will ramp up deportation efforts, already significant during the Obama administration.

red-necked Trump supporters who have taken his election as the green light to threaten, harass, assault, and even kill anyone who looks "different."

Couple this racist, bigoted mindset with an easy access to guns, and Trump's "Second Amendment Solution" is a very real threat to all of us.

nothing except roll over and protect their own careers from politically minded fascists.

They won't stop the bullying. Their inaction will only encourage it
They won't stop anything. They will say the law is the law and their hands are tied.

The cops will swarm into these schools looking for foreigners and the administration will just sit back and do nothing, protecting their own asses and careers.

Fuck school admins. And that's from a former teacher for 15 years as well as a former school admin. I know how admins think. I was one for a few years!
