Putin Says Russia Won't Expel Diplomats In Response To U.S. Sanctions
Source: NPR
Russian President Vladimir Putin says Russia won't be expelling U.S. diplomats in a tit-for-tat response to U.S. sanctions, as his foreign minister had suggested earlier Friday.
Instead, he says he will consider President-elect Donald Trump's actions as he considers how to move forward, The Associated Press reports.
Lavrov announced plans for Russia to respond in kind, as Lucian reported from Moscow. Lavrov's plan, which needed Putin's proposal, called for 35 American diplomats to be expelled, and for U.S. diplomats to "lose access to two buildings, just as Russian diplomats will no longer be able to use two retreats in Maryland and New York," Lucian reports.
But just two hours after Lavrov's comments, Putin announced there would be no such actions taken.

(61,709 posts)of course, but had to bring it up.
Fascinating story of the boys and how the parents managed to lead double lives for so long. I wonder if the Manhatten real estate/soviet agent knew Trumputin? Seems like it's possible.
A few decades ago, I was living in another large city and met a single man, from western Canada, engineer with major energy company. He spoke French also, and although we knew each other briefly, I had wondered if it was possible he was a spy since I had heard that Soviet spies frequently routed thru Canada.

I love the way that Obama set this up - that Trump will have to take explicit responsibility for any changes he makes to Obama's actions.

Very clever, Putin.
At the same time, he has a handful of American diplomats to hold hostage, if the whim strikes.
Now let's see what Obama does.

This kind of action would have been useful before the election. Too little, too late.

(3,666 posts)By making it abundantly clear that he regards Trump as his useful fool, he is actually intentionally sowing division among Americans, further undermining and discrediting our democracy. His goal isn't just to get a more friendly administration who will look the other way here and there. His goal is to humiliate America entirely, the way, in his mind America has humiliated Russia. How does he do that? He does it by first installing Trump, then making it clear that he regards Trump has his puppy, which makes it clear to many Americans that Trump not only lacks popular legitimacy, but also brings into question his formal legitimacy, by bringing into question the validity of the election, which divides Americans from each other, which discredits our democracy, which humiliate us in the eyes of the world, which makes us lose any claim to moral leadership of the so-called free world, which causes the free world to be rudderless and leaderless, especially if he can pull off similar tricks elsewhere, which gives Russia a free path to rise again!
So Trump is just a pawn in an elaborate chess game. Unfortunately for us he is too blind and narcissistic to appreciate the extent to which he is being used.
But maybe there's enough cold warrior left in some Republicans that they will not be taken in and will do everything they can both publicly and privately to stiffen the Donald's spine.
