Pope urges Trump to show concern for poor, be guided by ethical values

Source: Reuters

Pope Francis urged U.S. President Donald Trump to be guided by ethical values and as he took office on Friday, saying he must take care of the poor and the outcast during his time in office.

"At a time when our human family is beset by grave humanitarian crises demanding farsighted and united political responses, I pray that your decisions will be guided by the rich spiritual and ethical values that have shaped the history of the American people and your nation’s commitment to the advancement of human dignity and freedom worldwide," Francis said in a message sent to Trump minutes after he was inaugurated.

"Under your leadership, may America's stature continue to be measured above all by its concern for the poor, the outcast and those in need," Francis said in the message released by the Vatican.

Francis, the first pope from Latin America, has made concern for the poor and the weakest members of society a key platform of his nearly four-year-old papacy.

For all those watching from other parts of the world, this is the new order. Trump has declared independence from the responsibility to play global policeman. His role, as he sees it, is to protect and serve only his country and his countrymen. Values are for suckers.

Trump is no isolationist, though. He’s a unilateralist. Like Putin and Erdogan, he’s going to do things his way. He’s going to trust his instincts on where and when to intervene. He’s going to improvise. Traditions will matter only where Trump believes they provide useful leverage. If Putin likes me, he said at a Jan. 11 press conference, “that’s called an asset, not a liability.”

NATO, besides being hopelessly obsolete, has a very ugly history of intrigue and false-flag operations - some of them quite violent.

The best known is probably GLADIO - the massive psy-ops campaign they directed in Italy and to a lesser extent Germany in the 1970s to create hatred against the left in general.

Hundreds died and many more were injured or suffered property damage at the hands of extremists who, while truly radical and dangerous, were later shown to be directed by GLADIO under NATO auspices (Stefano Delle Chiaie orchestrated a lot of it). This is almost universally known in Europe; but much less so in the U.S.

Again, I doubt Trump really intends to limit them in any way.

Pope Francis should arrange a meeting with all the Catholic members of Congress and convey this same message.

Pope Francis could tell the Cardinals and Bishops to deny the sacrements to congressional Catholics who refuse to follow Church teachings on helping the poor.

And I am too - it's just that these neo-fascists seem to be impervious to any criticism, no matter how compelling.

That's why I believe that while progressive lawmakers, lawyers, and activists will succeed in terms of impeding these goose-steppers and stopping the worst abuses, Trump and his gang will fall more by their own doing than anything else.

They'll end up being hoisted by their own petard - like Bush and his gang were.
