Trump sued after Iraqis detained at airport

Source: Politico

President Donald Trump and his new administration are facing legal challenges after two Iraqis with valid visas to enter the United States were detained at a New York airport, following his sweeping executive order that bars citizens from several Muslim-majority nations from entering the country.

Lawyers for the International Refugee Assistance Project and the National Immigration Law Center filed a lawsuit early Saturday in federal court seeking to release Hameed Khalid Darweesh and Haider Sameer Abdulkhaleq Alshawi, who are being held at John F. Kennedy Airport.

Customs and Border Protection agents who detained the men at JFK are pointing to Trump’s executive order, telling the immigrants’ attorneys: “Mr. President. Call Mr. Trump,” according to the 20-page lawsuit. which was also filed by the Jerome N. Frank Legal Services Organization at Yale Law School and the American Civil Liberties Union.

Darweesh, now 53, worked on behalf of the U.S. military in Iraq for a decade as an interpreter and electrical engineer, earning him a so-called “special immigrant visa” that are allotted to Iraqi nationals who aided the U.S. government during the Iraq War and now face threats staying there. Darweesh applied for the visa in Oct. 1, 2014, which was issued on Jan. 20, the same day Trump was inaugurated.

There have been very significant problems with the Iraqi special immigrants.

This application was pending for more than three years, then granted the day Trump took office? This does not seem right at all.

The average time was supposed to be under a year according to the above. Why was this one still pending for over three? Or maybe it is that bad?

Here's a release about a lawsuit filed in 2015 on behalf of SIV applicants:
https://refugeerights.org/press-release-irap-and-freshfields-file-landmark-lawsuit-against-secretary-of-state-kerry-secretary-of-homeland-security-johnson/
New York, NY, March 11, 2015 – The Iraqi Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) at the Urban Justice Center and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer US LLP today announced a landmark lawsuit against U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, as well as the U.S. Departments of State and Homeland Security, on behalf of nine Iraqis in mortal danger as a consequence of their work on behalf of U.S. forces in Iraq.

The lawsuit, filed in Federal Court in Washington D.C., argues that the Obama Administration has failed to honor the Nation’s promise to protect its Iraqi allies through the Congressionally-mandated Iraqi Special Immigrant Visa program. The suit also asks the court to order the Obama Administration to act on these individuals’ applications for the special immigrant visas that will allow them to escape Iraq after years of waiting for the U.S. Government to act.

Amongst the nine Iraqi Plaintiffs are several former interpreters, as well as a doctor, an engineer, and other contractors, all of whom worked side-by-side with U.S. forces. All nine demonstrated their loyalty to the U.S. mission through their service, and in so doing rendered themselves targets for retaliation by extremists.
