Producers bringing '1984' to Broadway as novel's popularity soars under Trump
Source: The Hill
George Orwells "1984" is coming to Broadway as a stage production, The New York Times reports, as the novel enjoys new popularity under the Trump administration.
The play, created by writers Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan, has already seen multiple runs in the United Kingdom. But two producers, Sonia Friedman and Scott Rudin, are hoping to capitalize on the books current best-seller status in the U.S.
Sales of the dystopian novel published in 1949 have skyrocketed in the weeks since President Trump took office. The novel gained new attention particularly after a comment by White House senior adviser Kellyanne Conway dismissing false statements from press secretary Sean Spicer as alternative facts.
As of Friday, "1984" was ranked No. 2 on Amazons list of best-selling books. In fact, sales have surged so much that the online retail giant officially sold out of the book last week, but it has since come back in stock.

(7,528 posts)It's a comedic take on 1984, but still sharply satirical, and neatly outlines the problem of government bureaucracy stripping terrorism suspects of their rights. The plot is set off when a fly causes a machine to print the name "Buttle" instead of "Tuttle" on an arrest warrant.
