McCain: Having Mexico Pay For Border Wall 'Is Not A Viable Option'

Source: Talking Points Memo

By MATT SHUHAM Published FEBRUARY 3, 2017, 2:47 PM EDT

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said Friday that having Mexico pay for President Donald Trump’s proposed border wall was “not a viable option.”

When CNN’s Manu Raju asked McCain about the border wall, he specified at first that a wall alone, without “technology, individuals, drones, observation,” wouldn’t secure the border.

Raju then asked about Trump’s pledge to have Mexico foot the bill: “Do you think that's actually a viable option?"

“No,” McCain responded, adding when pressed: “Because it’s not a viable option.”

1. In a normal world the wall would be a finished topic.

What we have now is far from normal. The American tax payer will pay for the wall.

When he said the religious right had too much power in the GOP--right before Super Tuesday.

10. Good point. He should have spoke up before this creepy cult of Trump materialized

Would have been much easier to talk sense to them back then. Although, I think most of the hardcore Trumpers never had much respect for McCaine.

Any other R's crossing the line?
There's the reason.
When we get to 85% disapproval during the impeachment proceeding down the road, it'll be folks like McCain who came across the aisle, we'll be thankful for. We're in a hole here. We can't do it by ourselves with our numbers.

9. I just had a conversation about this with some Trump supporter

I was trying to avoid going into the debate of immigration, but rather focusing on the silliness of thinking that 2,000 miles of concrete is going to be an effective way to stop anyone from crossing the border.

Sensors and drones and increased manpower would be required either way, and the expensive immobile concrete wall will just take away funds from things that would improve detection. Even trying to meet them half-way with that wasn't taken well. "Build it 100 ft under ground and 500 ft high... I dunno.

I really do think Trump is waging economic warfare on the US and his plan is to bankrupt with a useless wall, destroy our trade, and of course cut the ACA which will end up causing who knows how much damage. Then I'm sure he'll overreact to some event and crack down hard. Which will, in turn, stir up extreme unrest and who knows how far that will get out of hand.

These idiots just keep eating it up thinking he's some brilliant strategist that will make them billionaires too. Then again, maybe he will make us all billionaires after our economy crashes and inflation makes the US dollar worthless.

But most of them will never admit their mistake. More likely, they'll blame Obama.

paragraph and imo you have something.

As for "viable," extreme understatement by McCain. Not often mentioned among all the giant reasons Mexico is not paying for this intolerable insult (as if any others were needed) is the fact that it's very much not in Mexico's interest. One big thing is that a lot of the migration is from more troubled nations to Mexico's south, and those immigrants are a great expense to Mexico. The last thing Mexico would want is to stop those it failed to block a thousand miles before from passing on out.
