‘Do You Hear the Silence?’: Elijah Cummings Slams Republicans for Lack of Oversight of Trump and Flynn

by Justin Baragona | 12:56 pm, February 14th, 2017

Following declarations made by the Republican chairmen of the House Oversight and Intelligence Committees this morning that they wouldn’t be conducting any additional probes into the Trump Administration surrounding the resignation of National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) ripped into them.

Cummings, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, highlighted the silence coming from those in power to investigate President Donald Trump and Flynn. “Let me begin by asking everyone in this room a very simple question,” he said. “Do you hear that? Do you hear the silence?”

Cummings continued, “This is a town of House Republicans conducting no oversight of President Trump. Zero. That is what it sounds like when they abdicate their duty under the Constitution.”

He further added that House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz “has not lifted one finger” to investigate Flynn’s Russian ties.

Hypocritical silence from Republicons. They are scared because they too suspect this goes deeper and higher. Some of them may be complicit too.

Senators Roy Blunt (Intel Committee) and Bob Corker (chair Foreign Relations Committee) have called for "exhaustive" investigations of the Flynn affair. I think they want to get rid of this terrible orange cancer growing on the Republicon Party.

Remember, Rence Priebus ran the Republicon election in 2016 and the lead-up.

Pence knew and covered up. He was informed at least by late January by Yates.

to *45 if necessary. Well, that was either a goddamned lie or they don't think that the National Security Adviser colluding with a foreign government then lying about it is anything to be concerned about. Unfuckingbelievable.

They are so goddamed arrogant that they think that they don't even have to pretend to look out for America's interests. It's power and party over country every single time. But at least *45 is #1 with something--it took Nixon 5 years for people to be asking, "What did the President know and when did he know it?" It's taken *45 only 25 short days.

that there would be no discussion of oversight!
http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2017/02/chaffetz-says-trump-wouldnt-let-him-talk-about-oversight.html

".....Trump wouldn’t even allow him to discuss his ability to investigate the administration to ensure it is adhering to ethical standards.

“Before my bum even hit the chair, the president said, ‘No oversight. You can’t talk about anything that has to do with oversight,’” Chaffetz said.

The Utah congressman said the president was inquisitive and “chit-chatty,” according to Politico. They discussed Postal Service reforms, undoing President Obama’s creation of the Bear Ears National Monument, embassy security, and reducing the costs of the federal workforce. Chaffetz said they also talked about the size of Trump’s election win, but not his vow to continue investigating Hillary Clinton’s private email server.

........

Mr. Chaffetz’s visit to the White House was unusual. House members who are not in leadership rarely get a one-on-one sit down meeting with the president."
