Spicer: Anne Frank Center Should Praise Trump's 'Leadership'

Source: Talking Points Memo

By MATT SHUHAM Published FEBRUARY 21, 2017, 2:15 PM EDT

White House press secretary Sean Spicer responded to a harshly worded comment from the Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect Tuesday by saying he wished the center had recognized the Presidents leadership in combating anti-Semitism.

The center responded to Trumps denunciation of anti-Semitism Tuesday after relative silence from his administration on the issue by calling it a pathetic asterisk of condescension after weeks in which he and his staff have committed grotesque acts and omissions reflecting Antisemitism, yet day after day have refused to apologize and correct the record. Spicer said he had seen the statement.

I think he has been very forceful with his denunciation of people who seek to attack people because of their hate, because excuse me, because of their religion, because of their gender, because of the color of their skin," he said. "This is something that he is going to fight and make very, very clear that has no place in this administration.

But I think it's ironic that no matter how many times he talks about this that it's never good enough, Spicer continued. Today I think was an unbelievably forceful comment by the President as far as his denunciation of the actions that are currently targeted towards Jewish community centers. But I think that he has been very clear previous to this that he wants to be someone that brings this country together and not divide people, especially in those areas.

Sean Spicer snaps at Anne Frank Center: Trump condemns hate and ‘it’s never good enough’ for them

DAVID EDWARDS
21 FEB 2017 AT 14:30 ET

“His statement today is a pathetic asterisk of condescension after weeks in which he and his staff have committed grotesque acts and omissions reflecting anti-Semitism, yet day after day have refused to apologize and correct the record,” the statement said. “Make no mistake: The Antisemitism coming out of this Administration is the worst we have ever seen from any Administration.”

During the White House press conference on Tuesday, Spicer complained that Trump’s actions were “never good enough” for organizations like the Anne Frank Center.

“The president has made clear since the day he was elected, and frankly going back to the campaign, that he is someone who seeks to unite this country,” Spicer said. “He brings a diverse group of folks into his administration, both in terms of actual positions and people who he sought the advice of.”

“And I think he has been very forceful with his denunciation of people who seek to attack people because of their hate, because of their religion, because of their gender, because of the color of their skin,” he continued. “And it’s something he’s going to continue to fight and make very, very clear that [it] has no place in this administration. But it’s ironic that no matter how many times he talks about this, it’s never good enough.”

Frank and Douglas at the Bowling Green Massacre. Spicer was nowhere to be found. I heard later he was at sick-call, watching Fox News, while waiting to get his little feet looked at.

I think it was on a 60 Minutes interview mid-campaign. That's the only time I remember him addressing his anti-Semitic followers and it was in response to a question or else he probably would have continued his silence /tacit approval.

Can't be more abundantly clear than that!

Following a recent wave of anti-Semitic attacks, including more than a dozen bomb threats targeting Jewish community centers around the country on Monday alone, President Donald Trump condemned such acts as "horrible" and promised these kinds of actions would end soon.

"The anti-Semitic threats targeting our Jewish community and community centers are horrible and are painful, and a very sad reminder of the work that still must be done to root out hate and prejudice and evil," Trump told reporters during a visit to the National Museum of African-American History on Tuesday.

The president's comments come amid increased pressure for him to directly denounce anti-Semitic incidents, which have surged since he won the election. In addition to bomb threats on Monday, dozens of tombstones at a Jewish cemetery near St. Louis were pushed over in an apparent act of vandalism.

But Jewish groups, including the Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect, which addresses civil rights issues in the US, called Trump's brief remarks on Tuesday insufficient and are demanding the president do more than place a "Band-Aid on the cancer of anti-Semitism" that has affected his administration.

"When President Trump responds to anti-Semitism proactively and in real time, and without pleas and pressure, that's when we’ll be able to say this President has turned a corner," a statement from the center on Tuesday said. "This is not that moment."...........................

I've never seen a more lukewarm half assed attempt to reject racism. Trump may or may not be a racist - but he sure as fuck knows "his base" is a bunch of white supremacist knuckle draggers. I'm sure they are coming up with excuses for Trump's betrayal of their racist manifestos as we speak.
