One of Duterte's Biggest Critics Arrested on Drug Charges
Source: Bloomberg
Philippine police arrested Senator Leila de Lima on drug-trafficking charges on Friday, a move that sidelines one of President Rodrigo Dutertes toughest critics.
A court ordered de Limas arrest on Thursday after she was indicted over allegations she let the illegal drug flourish inside the national jail during her time as justice secretary. Judge Juanita Guerrero found sufficient probable cause to issue the warrant, according to a copy of the order.
I am innocent and there is no truth to allegations that I benefited from the illegal drug trade, that I took drug money, that I protected drug convicts -- these are all lies, de Lima told reporters on Friday outside her Senate office, where she spent the night before surrendering to authorities.
It is my honor to be jailed for the things I fight for, she said, adding that she wouldnt stop fighting for truth and justice against the daily killings and other abuses of the Duterte regime.
