‘I don’t like the racism and I don’t like the name-calling’: George W. Bush continues political assault on Trump

On the heels of an interview filled with back-handed comments about President Donald Trump, former President George W. Bush outright slammed the president and his administration for its “racism” and “name-calling.”

In an interview with People magazine, Bush went beyond the subtle jabs at Trump to accuse the new president of alienating people.

“I don’t like the racism and I don’t like the name-calling and I don’t like the people feeling alienated,” Bush began. “Nobody likes that.” He went on to call the climate in Washington, D.C. “pretty ugly,” emphasizing, “I’m not going back nowhere!” Still, the former president said that he is “optimistic about where we’ll end up” as a country. He explained America has been through difficult periods before and figured its way out.

Bush also said that he is speaking out about Trump now because he didn’t “feel like” doing it before.

My god. I can't believe this country has come to the point so low that G. W. Bush is the wise person in the GOP.

His complete absence from both the GOP Convention and Trump's campaign was actually a pretty bold statement by omission for the most recent sitting Republican President to make.

...and they're all the same to them. Hell, I remember arguing with incipient "alt-righters" back when Bush was governor of Texas, and they hated him then. They hated him because they hated his father.

Not defending his godawful presidency, just saying...

I have to admit, he's climbed onto a higher plateau in terms of my respect for him.

But, I agree with others who ask, "where was this criticism during the campaign?" It's not like any of this Trumpist BS is a surprise (to those of us who have been paying attention).

Oh, that's right: W didn't feel like it.

Heck, I wish Obama, Clinton, etc would. I never understood the presidential code or party loyalty thing when circumstances would seem to demand that a past president speak from personal/professional experience or defend themselves and their accomplishments.

His not feeling like it may be due to the above or it's possible that he simply wasn't paying that close attention. I'm starting to really wonder if he sucked so horribly as president at least partially because he wasn't truly all that into politics and would rather be tinkering on his ranch back then and/or painting in his studio now.

Not necessessarily unselfish public service, but it's there, and they understand what government is supposed to do.

I'm rather stunned to find myself even saying this, but the contrast between the Bushes and the Trumps is unbelievably stark.

The Trumps have no sense of nation -- their business empire and their own self-aggrandizement is all they see. It's all tran$actional.
