U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday said he would not back slashing State Department funding as the Trump administration is expected to propose, adding that deep cuts would not pass the legislative chamber.
Speaking to reporters, McConnell also said Republicans, who control both the Senate and the House of Representatives, are still not in agreement on a healthcare plan to replace Obamacare.

Trump administration officials said on Monday they sought to increase Pentagon spending and offset that with sharp cuts in other areas. One official familiar with discussions about the State Department budget said the agency could see spending cut by as much as 30 percent.
Other officials have speculated that the total cut in the combined budgets of the State Department and the Agency for International Development could be as great as 37 percent.
The United States spends just over $50 billion annually on the State Department and foreign assistance, compared to $600 billion or more each year on the Pentagon.

(624 posts)total control. In this case, the mere idea is ridiculous on its' face. Trump might have been the godsend we needed as a party. He appears to be doing nothing but exposing the Republicans for what they are. I only hope he doesn't do damage during what I suspect will be his very short tenure.
