Alabama drive-in nixes 'Beauty and the Beast' over gay character

Source: LGBTQ Nation

By Erin Rook · Saturday, March 4, 2017

An Alabama drive-in theater won’t show Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast because it includes a gay character, WHNT19 reports.

“It is with great sorrow that I have to tell our customers that we will not be showing Beauty and the Beast at the Henegar Drive-in when it comes out,” the theater wrote in a Facebook post Thursday night. “When companies continually force their views on us we need to take a stand. We all make choices and I am making mine.”

By Friday morning, fewer than 12 hours after the theater made its statement, the post had received more than 600 share and 500 comments. But by Friday evening, the drive-in’s Facebook page was gone. WHNT19 said it’s not clear if it was removed by the theater or taken down by Facebook, and Henegar Drive-in had not responded to a request for comment.

The owners said they took issue with the film introducing a “homosexual character” and with Director Bill Condon’s promise of a “surprise for same-sex couples.”

Feb 23: ‘Beauty And The Beast’ Roars On To Tracking, Looking To Shake Up March Records – Box Office Projection

http://deadline.com/2017/02/beauty-and-the-beast-big-march-box-office-opening-1201930478/

Per one set of tracking there’s a 90% total awareness (huge), 15% unaided (whenever that’s in the double digits at that level — that’s huge), 20% first choice (ditto, like unaided awareness) and 56% definite interest.

Advance tickets sales kicked off with a trailer debut during The Bachelor on Jan. 30 and immediately topped Fandango’s pre-sales. We hear Beauty and the Beast has the advance sales-intensity normally seen on superhero tentpoles. And buzz among exhibitors who’ve seen the movie is through the roof. Disney’s live action fairy tales have become a box office cornerstone for the studio in the wake of Alice grossing $3.57 billion across five movies: Alice in Wonderland and its sequel last year, The Jungle Book, Cinderella and Maleficent.

If your "deeply held religious beliefs" include the marginalization and persecution of a minority group of ANY kind, then you adhere to a hateful, bigoted and anachronistic ideology. You are on the losing side of history and a pathetic excuse for a human.

May you bigots of that stripe live long enough to see history and justice march right over you.

Beauty and the Beast is the #3 most anticipated film of 2017 in Fandango’s annual survey behind only Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The first trailer in November clocked more than 127M views in the first 24 hours, while the teaser in May reached 92M over the same time frame. Both trailers outstripped the corresponding Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer at similar points in time. The most recent trailer has been viewed over 100M times.

... it could help to keep the business solvent for rest of the year (or at least pay the taxes and insurance and maintenance).

My guess is that they'd ALREADY come to the realization that their business is about to go bankrupt, and they decided to go out with a bang instead of a whimper. (Not even the Saturday/Sunday flea market could keep them in business. There just weren't enough wedding parties who were interested in renting the corrugated tin-roof pavillion with barbecue pit and picnic tables.)

Rather than accept responsibility for their poor business decisions, or that times-change and drive-ins aren't the profitable novelties they once were, or that they couldn't keep up... they will blame Disney and the homersekshuls when they go out of business later on this year.

And he's not the ONLY gay character in that movie. Or, for that matter, the animated one.

Here he is in 2017:

(Did they intend to use his gayness for comic relief? Whether they did or not, he made me laugh really hard.)

Now...here's the same scene in the animated predecessor to this film:

In both films, LeFou is openly gay and Gaston is still in the armoire.

I guess they never watched the original Disney film then because the original "Beauty and the Beast" pretty obviously laid out the same scenario as this movie. Go back and rewatch it, I know we've seen it more times than I care to count in our house, and tell me that that little guy doesn't have obvious romantic feelings for Gaston.
