(CNN)Police are investigating after five tombstones were damaged at a historic Jewish cemetery in New York this weekend.
A hate-crime task force is investigating whether the damage to the granite and marble tombstones at Washington Cemetery in Brooklyn was intentional.
The latest destruction comes amid a series of bomb threats and vandalism targeting Jewish institutions, including cemeteries, schools and community centers.
Last week, at least a dozen headstones were toppled at a Jewish cemetery at the Waad Hakolel Cemetery in Rochester, New York, following similar incidents in St. Louis and Philadelphia. In late February, at least 170 headstones were damaged at a Jewish cemetery in St. Louis.

(8,303 posts)It happens most frequently when you have warm/wet periods alternating with cold snaps, which we have been having. The water soaks into soil and then heaves up as it freezes, which creates more porous soil, which then causes water to sink further. This can topple headstones all on its own eventually. If the water gets under the stone in one spot, it will tip it.
In the right conditions in colder regions of the US, soil kind of gets "puffed up" during winter from this process. When spring comes, everywhere one walks on non-paved non-stony surfaces it feels like you are walking on a molehill.
