Alexandria City Public Schools to close for 'A Day Without Women' due to teacher absence

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (ABC7) All Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) will be closed on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 due to the observance of 'International Womens Day' or A Day Without Women. ... The school system announced Monday that after 300 staff members requested Wednesday off, theyve decided to close for the day. The day will be a teacher work day for ACPS staff.
The school system said this was not a decision that was made lightly, and was based solely on their ability to provide sufficient staff to cover all classrooms. They said this decision was not based on a political stance or position.
ACPS said students will not be required to make up this instructional day as this winter season has been mild, and the school system has enough snow days on the calendar to close Wednesday without adversely affecting the number of teaching days required by the State.
The school system apologizes for any burden placed on families when making this decision. ... They say they all Head Start or Early Heart Start programs will operate normally.

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City school district in North Carolina announced last week that it is canceling classes for similar reasons.
Alexandria, Virginia, is across the Potomac River from DC. I wonder if other local school systems will be closing.
