Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) said on Wednesday morning that in a meeting Tuesday with President Donald Trump and Sen. David Perdue (R-GA), the President told the senators to work on a bill to make the legal immigration system "merit-based."
Cotton told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" that the senators discussed their bill introduced last month to curb legal immigration and that Trump asked them to work on broader legislation.
"The President has said in public, as he told us yesterday, that he wants to move in the direction of, for instance, Canada and Australia, and focused on more of what he calls a merit-based system. Our legislation is the first step in that," Cotton said on MSNBC. "Hed like to see additional steps focusing on some of the employment based green cards and visas. And were happy to work with him on that."
The senators told Politico on Tuesday afternoon that Trump liked their bill. He knew all about it, Perdue told Politico.

(9,426 posts)will be exempt, since tRump is likely looking for a replacement for Maleria. What was HER employment qualification, by the way? Were we short of escorts, or nude lesbian soft porn "models"?? Her parents live at tRump Tower, members of the Communist party. How did THEY get visas?

(9,426 posts)The tRump sons, Beavis and Buthead, are requesting special visas for workers for their winery. They want 11 immigrants, to work for $11 an hour, who are capable of bending over picking grapes for at least 12 hours a day. This is TRUE.

(30,755 posts)the Emergency Quota Act or the Immigration Act of 1924. Those laws made sure that severe quotas were enacted against people based on race and country of origin. Their aim was to keep a distinct American character or profile. Of course, that was predominantly white and Christian. That did not change until 1965, with the Immigration and Nationality Act.
Unfortunately, with the climate we have now, a lot of people would be glad to restrict immigration of people who are not white and Christian. They forget about who is doing the backbreaking work.

(5,857 posts)was to auction off H1-B visas. Right now they are a lottery, and Indian companies enter umpteen times. Auctioning off the visas would make them expensive enough that companies wouldn't buy one to replace an existing worker.
There would be some exception for graduate students, medical residencies, etc.
I could actually get behind this if it looks anything like it sounded (doubtful with Trump).

(1,125 posts)have a "merit-based" system is because of the very generous social service programs that the governments provide to their citizens especially, and most importantly, healthcare. Immigrants entering those countries generally need to show that they will be active participants in the workforce/economy and be not a financial burden to the healthcare system.

(2 posts)Cher: "So like, right now for example. The Haitians need to come to America. But some people are all, "What about the strain on our resources?" Well it's like when I had this garden party for my father's birthday, right? I put R.S.V.P. 'cause it was a sit-down dinner. But some people came that like did not R.S.V.P. I was like totally buggin'. I had to haul ass to the kitchen, redistribute the food, and squish in extra place settings. But by the end of the day it was, like, the more the merrier. And so if the government could just get to the kitchen, rearrange some things, we could certainly party with the Haitians. And in conclusion may I please remind you it does not say R.S.V.P. on the Statue of Liberty. Thank you very much."

Outdated but still applies, just to different people.
