The poor just dont want health care: Republican congressman faces backlash over comments

Source: MSN/Washington Post

A first-term congressman who spent three decades as a physician — and is now part of a group of Republican doctors who have a major role in replacing Obamacare — is facing backlash after saying that poor people “just don’t want health care and aren’t going to take care of themselves.”

Rep. Roger Marshall, (R-Kan.), a member of the GOP Doctors Caucus, said comments he made to Stat News were not meant to suggest that poor people take health care for granted. The comments were published in a story last week about his burgeoning role in the fight to replace the Affordable Care Act.

“Just like Jesus said, ‘The poor will always be with us,’ ” Marshall said in response to a question about Medicaid, which expanded under Obamacare to more than 30 states. “There is a group of people that just don’t want health care and aren’t going to take care of themselves.”

He added that “morally, spiritually, socially,” the poor, including the homeless, “just don’t want health care.”

Yup, Democrats lost control of Congress because unlike Republicans, we did not show that we were concerned with needs of working class and middle class voters. If only we could emulate the concern shown by Republicans.

1) Knew that they wanted to be a doctor from early childhood to heal and cure people.

2) Extremely goal-oriented people that are drawn to the profession for some combination of high pay, high status and intellectual challenge.

A healthy chunk of #2 take narcissism to Trumpian levels. My wife worked with a surgeon that was drawing a +$750,000 salary, who was constantly trying to pad his expense account with things like personal smartphones and crap for his kids. And he wasn't even trying to be sneaky about it or commit fraud or anything. He just didn't understand why it wasn't acceptable to treat the hospital budget like his piggy bank.

He just had the mindset that the hospital existed to serve his needs, instead of the needs of its patients. And that having the hospital spend what was to him pocket change, on something that would make him happy was a win-win as far as he was concerned.

Eventually, he was poached by one of the other big hospitals in town, and was really irritated that instead of being begged to stay and a big salary bump, he got a nice going-away party and a "we know you'll do well in your new position."

This physician would counter the Congressman's comment with this: "Sir, please show me in the scripture, the moment, any moment, when Jesus Christ refused to offer help and healing to those he encountered?? When did Jesus ever ask payment for his services??" This type of mindset amongst physicians disgusts me. People who are poor don't have health insurance because they don't want it, it's because they can't afford it! Given a choice between the needs of daily life and insurance they will choose sustenance every day of the week. People in this country are crying out for real healthcare. To dismiss and demean them in this way is cold hearted and, frankly, anti-Christian. But I'm sure his prosperity gospel didn't teach him anything about the real teachings of Christ!

Are you sure you couldn't have healed yourself through hard work and pulling yourself up by your boot straps??? Clearly you didn't want my healing or you would have found a way to afford my healing graces"

And if He's assisted by any of His disciples, better check that they are in the plan's network too. Nothing worse than thinking things are OK because Jesus is in your plan's network, and then getting a big fat bill from one of his out-of-network disciples.

I almost don't need health care/insurance.

But it makes me angry beyond rational comment that anyone would ever want to deny someone health care. It is my own amazing health that makes me understand that others, not gifted with such health, deserve every possible help. I'm fortunate. Others are not. Some people have smoked and have consequences because of that. Others have crappy genetics. And so on. We are here to help each other.

I don't understand what part of we are here to help each other is difficult to understand.

Which side would the Republicons end up on according to the criterion below? What is their christian destination?

Matthew 25:31-46

When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers,[a] you did it to me.’

41 Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.
