While you were sleeping, a message with a swastika took over Twitter
Source: Boston Globe
A strange tweet beginning with a swastika and containing hashtags saying Nazi Germany and Nazi Holland made the rounds early Wednesday morning.
The tweet was sent thousands of times from numerous high-profile accounts of brands, businesses, and public figures, including Worcester State University and Polar Seltzer. In a 5:36 a.m. e-mail to the Globe, a Twitter spokesman said a third-party application was to blame for the hack.
A third hashtag in the message, which comes after a hand emoji, is Turkish for Ottoman slap, a legendary and perhaps apocryphal Turkish martial arts technique as well as a popular TV show. The message ends with the admonition, Learn Turkish.
A few of the later tweets replaced the Erdogan video with an image of an apparently Turkish man sitting at a computer, a video of the Turkish Gummy Bear Song, or an old panel from a Donald Duck comic strip. The cartoon image shows an organ grinders monkey operating a device below a word balloon that reads, Here, breathe in some cyanide gas. Nearby, Donald Duck reclines in an armchair and responds, Thank you, Jesus.

(101,400 posts)As Rob Lopez has pointed out on Twitter, the attack appears to be coming through a vulnerability in the third party app called Twitter Counter. So if youve ever used that service, you should go to Settings and Privacy and click on the Apps section. There youll be able to disable the third-party access to Twitter Counter. And you may as well disable third party access to everything else until we confirm every service thats currently vulnerable.

The hack is incredibly widespread, affecting verified accounts like Amnesty International, some celebrities, and soccer stars.
People are keeping tabs on all of the accounts getting hacked by monitoring the hashtags: #Nazialmanya and #Nazihollanda.

(22,651 posts)Twitter should stop allowing spam tweets to help slow down those automated script bots. AND start charging all businesses per tweet including mass media businesses.

(11,279 posts)but if I were in the Netherlands and saw "NaziHolland" that would freak me the f* out. Holland was actually pretty awesome in resisting the 3rd Reich, weren't they?

(22,651 posts)It's worse today for immigrants/refugees, there have been thousands of attacks on them even in their homes.
What those tweets do is effect elections, destabilize democracy, help sway the votes for people with similar 'moral values' as t(R)ump & his religion ban.
What I predict is Russia/Assad government have about 2 million 'prisoners' in their death camp prisons in Syria. They'll open the prison doors soon and send out another flood of thousands of 'refugees' on the world. People with serious health issues. They have already 'got rid of', exterminated about 6 million people.

(101,400 posts)in the Netherlands about the Turkish referendum to give Erdogan still more power, Erdogan and his supporters have taken to calling the Dutch Nazis.

(11,279 posts)I thought this was some comment about Geert Wilders or something.
If it is Erdogan's goons complaining, then I'm less worried about that. More worried about Twitter's security, though.
