Supreme Court Justice Alito: Gays treat conservative Christians 'as bigots'
Source: Associated Press

MADISON, N.J. (AP) The U.S. is entering a period when its commitment to religious liberty is being tested, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito told an audience Wednesday at an event sponsored by a Catholic lawyers organization.
Alito used his own words from his dissent in the Supreme Courts landmark same-sex marriage case, telling the gathering he had predicted opposition to the decision would be used to vilify those who disagree, and treat them as bigots.
We are seeing this is coming to pass, he said, then mentioned Bob Dylans famous song lyric, You dont need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.
A wind is picking up that is hostile to those with traditional moral beliefs, Alito said.

You don't get to impose your antiquated notions of "traditional moral beliefs" on everyone based on bullshit
written by ignorant males thousands of years ago with an agenda to codify their own power and hierarchy.

A truer statement was never spoken. NOW, let us take a historical look at 'traditional moral beliefs':
-Blacks were only good to serve as slaves
-Women should never own property
-Women should never vote
-No problem using children to work
-No problem burning people alive because your religion said to
The list could go on.
Alito is another in a long line of bigoted poster children standing on the wrong side of human history.

I believe what he meant to say is "traditional hate and bigotry"

If conservative Christians stop acting and talking like bigots, I can pretty much guarantee you that eventually even the scariest gay person will stop treating them as bigots.
It's TRUE!

No wonder this country is going down the tubes.
Lets take for instance there zippy the U.S. Supreme Court and the Indigenous People and Standing Rock in current events on religion since you like to invoke religion, in fact you just had a U.S. judge screw over the Cheyenne River Sioux, what say you Alito

(8,203 posts)same sex marriage - is equal protection under the law - with all due respect sir..unlike the respect from conservative so-called Christians...you have your belief system - equal protection is a belief system as well..live and let live - many in the LGBTQ community are Christian as well...
My question, where is the empirical evidence - he had predicted opposition to the decision would be used to vilify those who disagree, and treat them as bigots. You want to talk about "bigots" - we can have that discussion...
So Alito decides to launch that balloon....well, I say - nobody does mud like Republicans.

(9,999 posts)Should the Christian conservative bigots be mocked and shamed but tolerated to some extent, or should their bigotry be enshrined with certain legal protections? I say mocked and shamed but tolerated for being the bigots that they are as long as their beliefs do not infringe upon us non-bigots.
Alito's argument that if one is against bigotry they are themselves bigots is disingenuous.

From Merriam-Webster: Definition of bigot: a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance
From Merriam-Webster: Definition of bigot for children: a person who won't listen to anyone whose ideas or beliefs are different from his or her own; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial group) with hatred and intolerance
Seems pretty clear to me. What Alito has described is the actual definition of the word bigot. There's no moral component to it. Substitute any other group, and it's still bigotry: Black/N-word, Jew/Kike, Irish/Mick, Italian/Wop, Muslim/Raghead, Whites/White trash, etc., Native American/Redskin, Pakistani/Paki, Chinese/Chink. Just because someone identifies as LGBTQ, the intolerance by christians is still bigotry. And passing and approving laws in support of discrimination against LGBTQ are no different than laws supporting water fountains for "coloreds" or "No Irish or dogs allowed" or "No Jews need apply."

(52,116 posts)if it were a mere "disagreement", then people who believe homosexuality is a sin would simply personally refrain from it, and leave others to make their own decision.
the legal problem is when people take it way too far, and start making others pay a price for their own personal views.
a bakery refusing to bake a cake for a gay couple is not part of this "disagreement".
a civil servant refusing to do their job for gay citizens is not part of this "disagreement".
hiring/firing/promoting based on sexual orientation is not part of this "disagreement".
these are all acts of offensive bigotry and should be illegal.
moreover, they have *nothing* to do with "traditional christianity" in the sense that jesus never said to treat gay people horribly.
he said things like "turn the other cheek" and "let he who is without sin cast the first stone".
and when he admonished people to "love thy neighbor as thyself", he did not say "unless they be gay".

(90,758 posts)You hide behind religion to discriminate - which denies people their right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and you deny people human dignity by denying them equality and justice, then you are a bigot.
And there is nothing moral about it.
