'Passions are high' as Ben Sasse fields questions during Elkhorn South town hall

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Mara Klecker

A boisterous crowd of more than 500 drilled Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., with questions at a town hall meeting Friday morning at Elkhorn South High School.

Sasse seemed prepared for the combative crowd and stayed patient, pausing often to ask the audience to stop yelling over him as he fielded their many pointed concerns, mostly about health care legislation and President Donald Trump’s budget proposal. Scheduled to last an hour, the event stretched to 90 minutes.

Sasse repeatedly addressed the issue of polarization, which he said was more acute on Capitol Hill than in Nebraska.

“This nation is more divided in Washington than any coffee shop in Nebraska,” he said as the meeting began.

Think about it...not agreeing with someone, makes you part of a fringe group......instead of dealing with the issue at hand..health insurance and Drumpf....he calls those who don't agree a name....

Also...and almost important...is...., at least he held the meeting, unlike some...and allowed the meeting to go on a half an hour longer than expected. Now, I do think this guy is a jerk, but he did not run out like some others have, and he did, it seems ,,,,,answer some questions.....

This ilk, runs away and shortens the meetings....He allowed it to go on longer, and he didn't run away..I used to be a high school teacher, and although he didn't get all the answers right, I would still give him a passing grade ...a C+ ..just for trying ...and hanging in there.....not all of them do....

By staying longer ....it does say something.....cause so many don't even try ...they run.....

Take it from an retired high school teacher....it ain't easy...and I taught in some of the most difficult schools one can think of....was attacked...and stayed in there....So sometimes showing up..says a great deal about someone...even if we don't agree with them...

thank you for your report......and for going....best wishes always....!!!

This is a minority government. More than 3,000,000 more people voted for Hillary Clinton, and 14,000,000 million more voted against Trump than for him. In many swing states, there were massive attempts to suppress voting, and gerrymandered districts all over the country are so out of whack they are being shot down by the courts. Given that, why haven't the Speaker or the President made any attempt at being conciliatory, rather than driving a far-right, corporate agenda?

If the media hammered on the realities of the GOP healthcare repeal, the emoluments of Trump, the nepotism, and the Russian ties with the tenacity they did Hillary's e-mails, there might be more informed voters and a higher volume of pushback.

But they are either in the pocket of the GOP via their corporate owners, or intimidated, or a combination of both.
