Hearing to determined fate of husky pardoned by Paul LePage

Source: Sun Journal

AUGUSTA — Maine's conservation department is getting involved in the proposed pardoning of a dog, saying the case could have implications for the state's animal welfare laws.

Republican Gov. Paul LePage said last week he was pardoning Dakota the Alaskan husky from a death sentence levied at a court hearing. Dakota killed a neighbor's pug last year.

This a brief article, but I wanted to shared because I thought it was odd. I've never heard of governors pardoning animals before. I have no idea why LePage is pardoning the dog either.

"Dakota, a 4-year-old Husky, was declared a dangerous dog in February 2016 when she got loose in Winslow and killed a smaller dog, according to Winslow Animal Control Officer Chris Martinez.

Perry, her owner at the time, was ordered to keep her confined or on a short leash. However, Dakota got loose again in January and went back to the same house, where she attacked the previous victims’ new dog."

It sounds like the dog left its owners property and went over to the neighbor's property and messed with their dogs twice, killing one of them. I think Dakota's owners need to do a better job keeping the dog from getting loose.

They are extremely clever and are always looking for ways to get out of the house and RUN...and RUN. If they aren't 'raised' around smaller animals (cats and/or dogs) they may see them as prey when they grow up.

I have many many stories after having owned 3 huskies (whom I miss terribly).

...unless properly trained. It's the owners who should be punished severely, not the dog. People who do not treat dogs well, will not treat any other living animal well...human or otherwise. Mistreatment of animals is a precursor to mistreatment of people, if you need that to bolster an argument for compassion.
Killer dogs can be required to pass "Canine Good Citizen" training and certification before being released to supervised parole. I realize that is more than we provide for human criminals but you have to start somewhere. Maybe we, as well, can learn something from the rehabilitation of dogs. Could their owners pass a "Good Citizenship" test? Why not decide what "Good Citizenship" is for people and provide that training in prisons?
