Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) has told the Trump administration he will no longer pursue the post of FBI director. The second-ranking GOP senator interviewed for the job last weekend.

“Now more than ever the country needs a well-credentialed, independent FBI director. I’ve informed the administration that I’m committed to helping them find such an individual, and that the best way I can serve is continuing to fight for a conservative agenda in the U.S. Senate," Cornyn said in a statement.

UPDATE:

Cornyn, Senate majority whip, withdraws from FBI director consideration

By Sean Sullivan May 16 at 2:11 PM

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.) removed himself from consideration to be the next FBI director on Tuesday, following two days of resistance from his own Republican colleagues to the idea of him filling the post.

“Now more than ever the country needs a well-credentialed, independent FBI Director. I’ve informed the Administration that I’m committed to helping them find such an individual, and that the best way I can serve is continuing to fight for a conservative agenda in the U.S. Senate,” Cornyn said in a written statement.

Cornyn met with top Justice Department officials over the weekend about filling the job. Among those who did not want Cornyn to leave the Senate was Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). While Cornyn is well-liked on Capitol Hill, he is seen as a partisan whose confirmation hearing would have been expected to be highly contentious.

The president said Monday that his search was “moving rapidly.” McConnell predicted that Trump would make an appointment “in a week or so.”

One possible candidate removed himself from consideration Monday: Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.). “Our country and the women and men of the FBI deserve a Director with not only impeccable credentials but also one who can unite the country as we strive for justice and truth,” Gowdy said in a statement.

I'm glad he bowed out.

It would have not been good if he hadn't.

I think he was Trump's first choice.

I'm sure they'll pull some other toady out of Trumps massive arse but he won't have a "name" among right wingers and will be easier for the next president to can.

Why throw himself into that shark tank and gamble on how long the orange shitgibbon will keep him on until he sacks him?

Worthless, political hack pig. There goes "the least qualified" candidate. I'm sure this government nightmare will find someone just as hideous.

or two: He sees the Trump admin. sinking, and figures he might be out of a job soon, if he latches onto Trump's tailcoats.

Actually, I screamed "Oh No!" at all of them, but I'm glad to see Cornyn off the list.

Either would have been awful. Of course, anyone he nominates will be in the bag and have already kissed his ring and pledged to stop all investigations into drumpf.
