Gowdy poised to replace Chaffetz as Oversight chief
Source: Politico
Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) is expected to become the next chairman of the House Oversight Committee, replacing Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) in the high-profile post when he leaves Congress late next month, according to multiple senior House Republicans.
Gowdy, who led the Republican investigation into the Benghazi terror attacks, has started buttonholing members of the House Steering Committee in recent days to build support. Five members of that panel, which decides committee assignments, told POLITICO that Gowdy would easily win a race for the high-profile position.
If he does clinch the chairmanship, Gowdy would oversee a sensitive investigation into whether President Donald Trump pressured the FBI to drop a federal investigation of his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn.
Gowdy, a former federal prosecutor, previously was chairman of the House Select Committee on Benghazi.

(43,146 posts)You know where Gowdy stands. You want a political slant, a better man
could not be found.
The Senate? I think Burr is giving lip service to it. He'll drag his feet
where he can and tell you he's galloping like a racehorse.
Special Prosecutor? Will he get the resources he needs? I think he'll do
a great job, but this is such a large case, involving international elements.
Does the FBI have experience in that? I don't know. Hiring Bahrara even as
an underling, would infuse some energy into it. We may wind up with a dry
report, akin to Iran-Contra, or the S&L Crisis. Did you read them? Try finding
someone who did.
Of course, the criminal aspects could trump all the others and in far less time.
As a country, we need to root this out completely.

(11,563 posts)Trey Gowdy actually fabricated evidence against HRC during the Benghazi "investigation." How can he be given ANY appointment at all, when he's proved he can't be trusted with a burnt match.

Remember that when your heads are exploding because a conservative leaning Democrat made you angry. It's all about the math in the end.

(8,138 posts)Everyone who pays the least attention will be comparing his behavior on this investigation to his behavior on that other investigation. He will lose whatever credibility he has if he doesn't appear at least somewhat honest about it. And if he's not, I expect Elijah Cummings will eat him alive.
At this point the committee investigation probably doesn't mean that much anymore. It's just a way to keep the public informed, but I don't expect we will learn anything that we wouldn't eventually learn from Mueller's investigation anyway.
