Scoop: Trump is pulling U.S. out of Paris climate deal
Source: Axios
President Trump has made his decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the decision. Details on how the withdrawal will be executed are being worked out by a small team including EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt. They're deciding on whether to initiate a full, formal withdrawal which could take 3 years or exit the underlying United Nations Treaty, which would be faster but more extreme.

I wish Trump's father had pulled out.

(54,372 posts)On the other hand, you have about as much chance getting a job here knowing only English as you would in the States knowing only German. Learn the language and think up SOME kind of reason to convince them to let you live here, and you should be good (if I wanted to be really cynical, I'd say get yourself a convincing version of a Syrian passport, but they're kinda wise to that one at this point).
Are you married? If not, the natives here are VERY friendly. I know from first hand experience.

(16,858 posts)I am married. My wife's family is from Germany, her great-grandparents were first gen American. She grew up learning German as a kid because of her background and speaks it fluently, which pissed me off to no end last month when we had a German exchange student with us for a few weeks...the two of them would laugh and giggle while conversing in German and I was convinced they were talking about me, lol.
That being said, I do speak Spanish with a dash of other Romance languages thanks to that, but that wouldn't do me much good in Germany!
We used to jest about living in Europe, but as things have turned here in the states, that conversation has become more serious. Germany is a nice option for us, as is Ireland since my family has a close enough tie there that I could gain citizenship. It's just a sad reality that I never really thought we'd have to face that our country has become so broken that we'd seriously consider moving elsewhere. We're lucky that we even have the option to consider that move.

(54,372 posts)An EU country is not Switzerland. They have rules for rules that govern their rules, plus a hundred different offices and departments to be consulted before you are allowed to breathe. One of the German words with the greatest number of prefixes is "Kontrolle (control)." And the Beatles could have written "TAXMAN" about France or Germany:
If you drive a car, I'll tax the street
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat
If you get too cold I'll tax the heat
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet
Their tax people don't care much about the double-taxation treaty, either. All of my income is from the USA, and some of it is by law taxed at the source. Under the double taxation treaty, that means it cannot be taxed again in Germany. They don't care. From income on which I have already paid 40% on the gross, the Germans want another 50% of the gross, leaving me with about 10%. One of our neighbors is a judge on the local tax court, and wrote his Doctorate on double-taxation. He says they are full of shit, and if the case were to come before him, he would fine THEM for harassment and not me, but as a judge, he cannot be pro-active in a case, especially where one of the litigants is a friend.
Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of positive aspects, but don't expect it to be only paradise if you make the move, because it won't be.

(58,785 posts)Just decided we will mark this in our house by decreasing our carbon footprint still farther.
Many obvious things are already done. We pull on sweaters rather than heat the house before the sun does it for us. Perhaps start unplugging some appliances at night? My husband'll know which ones aren't already "energy-star" types. Or what else could we do?
We've cut back our carbon footprint a lot in many ways, but I confess even this still doesn't inspire me to start growing our own veggies in this hot humid climate, beyond the usual herbs. Still, figs grow themselves in this climate without fuss and are ripening now, so I can start canning the ones we don't eat instead of leaving them for the birds.
And I'll replant 2 little sour cherries to replace the one the road crew accidentally cut down. It was a decent little producer with no spraying or other special care.
We've been planting trees for shade, though, and I can't recommend that too much, both for the house and the garden. Stopping hot summer sun BEFORE it hits the house walls yields a very large payoff energy-wise. And in hot-summer climates, giving plants some dappled shade when the sun's high does a lot more to keep them healthy and happy than trying to make up for it by giving more water.
In most of the U.S. genuinely hot summers have become the norm, and they will inevitably become hotter still -- even if we didn't abandon our responsibilities as a nation.
