18 states sue Betsy DeVos over delay of student loan protections

Source: Politico

The lawsuit accuses DeVos of illegally delaying the regulations aimed at predatory colleges.

By MICHAEL STRATFORD 07/06/2017 10:35 AM EDT

Eighteen states and the District of Columbia filed suit against Education Secretary Betsy DeVos on Thursday over her delay of regulations meant to protect federal student loan borrowers defrauded by their schools.

The lawsuit in Federal District Court in D.C., led by Massachusetts and joined by 18 other Democratic attorneys general, accuses DeVos of illegally delaying the regulations aimed at predatory colleges, which were finalized by the Obama administration and had been set to take effect on July 1.

The rules, known as “borrower defense to repayment,” are aimed at making it easier for defrauded student loan borrowers to seek debt forgiveness. They also prohibit colleges from requiring students to resolve complaints against their school through arbitration rather than in court.

The Trump administration last month delayed implementation of the rules, citing a legal challenge by a California association representing for-profit colleges. DeVos said at the time the rule created “a muddled process that's unfair to students and schools, and puts taxpayers on the hook for significant costs.” The Education Department has said it will begin a process to rewrite the rules later this year.

Tie 'em up with lawsuits. A single bee is a very tiny thing. But a swarm of 'em can actually be a calamity.

Our teacher repeatedly said - "keep 'em busy. Keep 'em busy!" That usually went along with the order to jab. "Keep jabbing! Jab! Jab! Jab! Keep 'em busy."

Our sensei often talked about the matches and tournaments he'd entered, and what he learned from watching and then applying what he saw. He'd talked about the guy who stayed in, all the way to the end, with an injured arm. And it did not stop him. All he could do was jab with the other arm. And that, he did. "Jab, jab, jab." Kept 'em busy. And wore 'em down in the process. People with strong kicks and two strong able arms - they could not stop him. Because he wouldn't stop and he wouldn't give in and he wouldn't stop jabbing. He kept 'em busy and he outlasted them.

I tried that myself. Sparring wasn't my strong suit. I liked the forms much more. But I knew enough to try at least to hang in there. Jab, jab, jab. Keep 'em busy. You just might wear a few of 'em out.

Also reminds me of that scene in one of the Jurassic Park movies. It featured one cocky swaggering character in particular, who was a hunter and kind of an antagonist. He and his attitude pretty much held the day until at one point, I believe he went off into the jungle to take a pee or something. And there was this little spindly foot-tall dinosaur that approached, got a bit too close, and the man sneered at it. No threat. Just a nuisance. Kicked it away. Man continued picking his way through the jungle. The little dinosaur got back in the game and started to follow. Man noticed, kicked it away again, a bit more annoyed this time. Continued on his way, but quickly realized the little pest was back, but he had a pal with him this time. Shooed them both away and proceeded. But the two little guys persisted. And now there were four or five of 'em. This started to bother the big bully. He quickened his pace. As he did so, more of the little guys appeared, and started following him. Now he's starting to feel a little bit unsettled and walks faster. They're still coming, and there's even more of them now. Man begins to worry and breaks into a run. They're following, alright, and closer in, also. There's dozens of them by now. In his haste to escape, he trips and falls, and all of a sudden, they're all over him, and he quite literally ends up "taking them to lunch." (Except HE'S their lunch.)

Glad they are making time to do START their job at some unspecified time in the future.

They will maybe START the process of review months after the July 1 start date. Fucking morons. That's all I can say. I've had it.
