HAMBURG, Germany (AP) With broad grins and a warm handshake, President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin warmed up for their historic encounter on Friday under the shadow of U.S. outrage about Russian election-meddling and nagging questions about potential Trump campaign collusion.
Ahead of a formal, sit-down meeting, Trump and Putin were seen exchanging pleasantries as a leaders' retreat got under way in Hamburg. As officials gathered around a table, Trump outstretched his hand to Putin and then patted his elbow and both men smiled. A brief video clip shows Trump casually patting Putin on the back as they stand side by side.
Video of the brief exchange was posted to Facebook by the German Cabinet. It was the first known in-person interaction between the two men, who have spoken by telephone since Trump was inaugurated in January.
The two leaders planned later Friday to hold longer talks on Syria and other issues on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit of industrialized and developing nations. The White House said it has scheduled 35 minutes for the meeting.

President Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, met for the first timeat least since Trump's electionat the G20 Summit in Germany Friday morning. In a prelude to a formal bilateral meeting on which Trump insisted, and about which many observers and even some of his national security team are concerned, the two exchanged a handshake in a more open setting while other G20 leaders milled around. Because it's 2017, there's video via the German cabinet's Facebook pagealthough it looks like it was shot on a waiter's lapel camera and smuggled out to the waiting world:
. . .
By now, we're all aware of how important handshakes are to Trump. For a man whose governing principles are dominating others and avoiding shame, "winning" the shake is all-important. That's why he and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau engaged in a War of North American Forearms when they first met, and why he attempted to amputate French President Emmanuel Macron's arm at the shoulder after a perceived slight. The same slight apparently helped tip him towards leaving the Paris climate agreement, because nothing matters.
But his interaction with Putin here is perhaps his first shake that's not overdosing on machismoit's a fairly normal handshake, one you'd respect from, well, a normal world leader who actually respectsor is concerned with showing respect forhis counterpart. More than that, he goes for the weird back pat after, which is about as much affection as we've seen him show for another human being in public. We await the big bilateral meeting, and hope Alaska is still part of the United States by the time it's over.

(811 posts)That 2013 interview doesn't say they met face to face, but it is quite possible they did. After all,he says that they spoke directly and indirectly but does not specify whether it was in person or by phone or face time. How anyone can trust this relationship is beyond me. Putin the former KGB head and the immature liar who is dumb and dumber and may possibly be suffering from dementia.

(2,396 posts)From his interview with Lester Holt-
I speak with the head of China. I have to speak with Putin also. It's called Russia.
But when I spoke with Putin, he asked me whether or not I would see Lavrov. Now, what do I -- should I say no, I'm not going to see him? I said, I will see him.

Yes you coward, you say no. Instead you gave the pair a nice, private tour of the white house while revealing classified info. What an ass.

Powell, I looked into Putins eyes and I saw his soul.
Powell:
Mr. President, I looked into President Putins eyes and I saw the KGB!
The vast personal character and mental deficiencies and paranoids of Trump are so vast, so abysmal, so unpresidential, any decent human would deem this walking horror of a little man as illegitimate to be president of the United States. I hope.

(24,259 posts)That 'first' handshake and than the affectionate back 'pat pat' today is normally done between men that know each other pretty well. Later they're sitting down and leaning towards each other and talking to each other and the camera like old friends.
Trump saying he didn't know and had never met Putin is just a another one of his lies.
