Group flies Confederate flag again at South Carolina capitol

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) A group still angry that South Carolina removed a Confederate flag from the Statehouse lawn has raised the rebel banner on a temporary pole at the capitol again.
The South Carolina Secessionist Party planned to leave it up for several hours Monday, and said they will fly the flag every July 10th.
Two years ago Monday, state officials removed the flag that flew outside the capitol for 15 years. The decision by lawmakers was prompted by the massacre of nine black worshippers in a racist attack at a Charleston church.
About 50 flag supporters were separated Monday from a dozen protesters who hurled sarcastic insults.

There are apparently a small group of black confederate-embracing activists who descend from those blacks who did serve as confederate soldiers during the Civil War.

(13,874 posts)I live in Columbia, and a friend of mine who works downtown walked past there this morning. She said there were no more than 25 supporters there, and at least 10 of them selling memorabilia. She said there were more than 50 opponents chanting and holding signs.

(34,138 posts)I can say that because half my ancestors were from the South and most of the Civil War generation enlisted in the Confederate Army. Some never came home at all and some came home but left body parts on the battlefields. None of them came home and were proud of what they had done.
